Thunderbird Club

Happy Girl with a Gibson bass, hope it’s a lovely Thursday for all!

I never leave good enough alone with my refinished Thunderbird. The EQ bypass with the Bartolini electronics didn't seem terribly useful to me, since the battery still drains while bypassed, so I changed it to a coil split - the whole reason I bought the splittable Bartolini pickups to begin with. I now have a decent, if somewhat mid-heavy, Jazz Bass sound at the flip of a switch, and want to put this back in E standard tuning to enjoy the slap tones I can get to their fullest. Looks like I'll keep the stock Gibson pickups for the next project (a dedicated B standard bass).
I just bought some Bartolinis - good idea doing the coil split! It’s a very useable sound on my Les Paul Tribute.

I think I can get away with posting this here as it has Thunderbird lineage, Epiphone's new Newport bass! This all mahogany short scale bass features a Thunderbird pickup paired with a neuteredbucker and a two piece Thunderbird bridge. The two pickups play very well together and offer up a ton of tone options. The bass is stunning in pacific blue and the biild quality is very very good and frankly I expect that these days even on a instrument that MAPs at $379. Out of the box set up was ridiculously high and the nut need a fare amount of filling to get things where I like them. Once set up the bass plays beautifully with nice low action. I bought mine at the House of Guitars, Sweetwater has them for 24 months no interest and if you ask you can get a price of $349. I'll be doing a full video review shortly.View attachment 4955985 View attachment 4955986 View attachment 4955987 View attachment 4955988 I highly recommend this bass for its unique combination of features and all out cool factor!
Dude, how many basses do you own?
I was hoping there would be one at Long and Mcquade when I stopped by today, but not yet.

I honestly have no idea how this happened, I went to this thrift store I frequent and the guy goes "Walter, do I have a deal for you!"

Before presenting me with THIS.

He told me that it was a consignment piece and the guy selling it wanted 40 Euros for it.

That means that it has issues, and the guy goes, "The pin where you hook up the octave string for the low G has broken off." So either you replace the tailpiece or play with only seven strings and when it was plugged in there apparently was no sound.

I debated for over two seconds and took it home with me. Plugged it in and it works just fine.

So what did I buy exactly?

Yeah, I got a 229 Euros discount here.

Crazy, right?

Congrats! That looks really cool, I would have been tempted myself.
And I'll raise you one autoharp. ;)

That’s a case where enabling here really worked out in the end. That is a cool Thunderbird.
I've always loved playing it. Gibson did a great job on that one and I just love the feel of it. Only people would get that. Plays and feels 99% as good as my '64 and it's a real joy that it sounds so good now. I thought of parting with it when I got the NR, but that isn't going to happen. The black nylons are really a great match with SIT Power Steels coming in second.

This^^ If you aren't in love with the current version, why not try an exchange? Short scale seems to be a benefit at some of the places you play.
I'm really quite pleased with the Embassy. As I said, if the Newport had come out sooner, maybe. I already have 2 short scales in my collection: an Epi EB-0 and an Ibanez semi-hollow body. So I'm set. At least until the "Prize Patrol" shows up
They said they have my address...

I think I'll be turning up the preamp's internal gain pot. I found the Bartolini Classic Bass pickups are wound a lot milder than the stock Gibson pickups. The volume in series is a little quieter than the DiMarzio Model P in my Precision, and split is weaker than my Rickenbacker 4001.

Shipment arrived. Now if the grandsons would just go to bed.

And the new one, right, does sweep 0-550k ohms.
Excellent!
Now don’t forget, tin the wires and tin the lugs. And a hot iron and 60/40 rosin core is essential to easy soldering on the pot housing.

Good luck, hope you’re back up and running in no time!
