Thunderbird Club

Right. I’m glad I went through several basses before overcoming my prejudices and getting a Thunderbird. It gave me the experience on both sound and feel to be able to judge a new ( to me) bass and decide it was for me.

on another note I had a memory that I verified the other day. The late Allen Collins used to play Firebirds, Explorers, and occasionally Strats. When he played either Firebirds or Explorers, he always had the strap over the upper rear bout of the guitar. Now that I have my own Thunderbird, I understand that was meant to counter forward flop. Do any of you do the same thing?
Some here do it for that, and/or to help with those that tend to neck dive. I occasionally do it for the latter reason.

Ya know, that AMX falls into a category I’d call a “seriously collectible sleeper”.

They had a drop dead gorgeous body style, nice engines, low production and were only made for a few years. Because they never quite caught on like the mustangs, Cameros, Cudas, Chargers and Chevelles, of that day a lot of them fell by the wayside and wasted away, making the survivor base even more rare.

I’d hang on to that car at all costs, it meets every criteria for skyrocketing appreciation, it’s just gonna be a couple of decades behind the other muscle and sports cars of that era. Most of the other collectibles from 1970ish jumped in value from hobby affordable ($30,000ish) to nearly hobby unobtainable ($100,000+) in the early 2000’s. I expect the AMX to do the same in the next 10 years or less. Just keep it as original as reasonably possible, keep the body straight and the paint good, and exercise it about 5000 miles a year max - you’re sitting on a gold mine.

Adding songs to play weddings is an adventure. I remember having to learn how to play this. Ugh.

My wife got through what would likely otherwise have been a rigorous customs search in another country when their group leader, who knew the customs people, asked if they wanted to see the chicken dance. After the group danced, the customs people applauded (laughing) and waved them through.

The car show I played on Canada Day had 600 cars. Many were jaw dropping gorgeous.
And a few AMCs. The green Gremlin is a full on drag car.

The previous owner installed lightweight Gotoh tuners and it has a smaller headstock than the Epiphone VPs. There was zero neck dive. While I did move the rear strap button up the body, I’ve moved it back to the center since wrapping the strap over the upper part of the body works better for me.

Are you looking to make it black with the white piping again or go AV style with the silver/blue-green’70’s style.

I have redone a number of cabs and head grilles with the ‘70’s style, lots of work and frustration fighting with my inner perfectionist getting the lines straight and having it be stretched tight.

My preference is to re-do it in solid black as it was originally - I've found a couple of sources that I've bookmarked, but as I've got other projects in process/in queue, I've not cut into it further, yet.

That is such an awesome rig Kara.
I’ve heard that combo and it just kills.

rehearsal spot we used had that exact same rig…..TB+ with RS66 sounded truly thunderous (can’t think of a better word) through that….

Of the amps I've tried with the cab so far, the Peavey Mark III/IV amps have been the best, imo, largely because of their EQ-ing options.
Would love to hear how it sounds cranked up a bit......

I’ve never tried driving Porches, but I would think they would be incredibly slow, unless they were part of a mobile home in transit on the highway. ;)
Well now, you haven't really lived now have you? Had a cousin who drove a car onto a non-gound level porch, but porch driving is far more exciting. BUT: Do NOT attempt without proper wiring harnesses.:smug:
