Thunderbird Club

Paul's playing is some of my favorite, maybe because it's the closest to my early musical experience, from childhood.
And he's got some of the most unexpected approaches to playing a line- he almost *leaves the realm of bass playing* with his forays- but an interesting thing happens: what he plays redefines the term "bass line" in real time- as you're listening. You say, "Oh, yeah of course..." The dude invents playing bass again for the song he's playing. He's the only one who does that, seems to me.
I don't do that. But maybe the influence was profound enough to make itself evident somehow?
Only Paul is Paul... But it's fun to consider that a positive influence could express itself in your own art, that some of these characteristics could be shared among us all, here and there.
We've all got our own evidence of shared influence, for sure.
Squire was like that too.

Chuck @Chucky Stiletti ,

I came up to the mountain house today. The 6550’s in my ‘08 SVT VR (made in Vietnam) are Sovteks.

I've received the pickups!!!

They look great, my bird is in pieces until further notice. I need to fill the original cavities (debating if i go full or partial) & shave off some from the front/back of the cavities cause the pickup doesnt fit directly (probably my paint build up & such). I will be painting their covers in black, but man, im a sucker for chrome :)

Edit: for general knowledge the pickups are 0.461" (~11.70mm) thick.
I think there’s someone on eBay that sells covers in plain steel. Might be easier to paint.

A

I have been fortunate. I’ve been looking for a G3,Grabber or Ripper for a couple of years now. The prices on those have gone up substantially in the last few years.
There is no way that I was going to pay $3000 + on Reverb for a beat up specimen.
What got me on this one was that it was advertised as mint and it was close by.
The seller was asking $1800 and we settled on $1550. I consider this one to be investment grade.
I went over it carefully last night and did find a scuff on the back of the lower bout.I’ll post the picture:)
No belt rash either.
The seller even apologized about thumb prints on the tuners.
I remember when they were practically giving these away. Mrs Gator loves natural wood guitars so she practically pushed me out the door to go pick it up.
I put a dime next to the “damage” maybe I should return it. :)
Cheers!

My wife’s favorite bass of mine is the natural ‘86 Peavy Foundation with the ‘93 neck. I paid $300 for it. But it’s worth a lot more than that to me. It has the lowest action of any bass I’ve ever played. The neck is fabulous.

If you can get the cover off the pickup you might be able to take it to a local car wheel refinisher. They usually have contacts in the coating and plating business that could do a black chrome job or a smoke chrome or powder coating and sealing in any color you want. The local one for me offered to smoke chrome mine at no cost as long as he had a customer that was already having car wheels treated at the same time. Just a thought.

Oh, so we’re flashin our racks now. Take a look at this pair…

Unfortunately, I only have two guitar racks, I need to buy a third to hold all the Tbirds.
The racks don’t look like Hercules, but this might work. You have a lot of space between axes.

I'll have a look see, thanks for the suggestion!

The cover's held on with 4 tabs of solder, so that'll be easy enough to undo/cut from the pickup without damaging the pickup under. I'll have to search on what's local to me. It definitely sounds like the more pro perma thing, which am not against. I'll see what's easier overall (+ since this bass has been through loads of mods/upgrades/hell, painting the covers may result in the kind of "damaged/worn" look that blends with the tree roots & such.

That was fast!!

Indeed, i was expecting them only next week or even two weeks from now! Lucky for me in both regards, they shipped/arrived fast, & they were the only 2 in stock !! :)

It's Philadelphia Luthier Supplies that has plain covers.
