Bought on your suggestion.

I like other SIT strings just never tried these particular ones.
Next choice would have been some flavor of roundcore DR.

Went heavier than my usual gauge to play it low action. And figure high output strings with more mass might work well on the bird.

If not SITs I really like Ken Smith Rock Masters, not quite a s brittle as DRs and I think a bit more balanced overall, I have them on my two Birds that have the newer Gibson re-issue pickups and find them to be a good match.

I’ve played well up the neck on my birds before, but typically by working my way up to and/or down from those high frets. I’m working on All Right Now (which I’ve always loved) and it’s a new experience.
I had to retune a bird to E standard. Anything else is nuts, and in D standard I’d have to leap up to 18/21 instead of 16/19. It’s the first time I’ve even considered whether I need some other style bass. Eep!

Amp stuff...
Last night I played in the house band for an open mic. I had the Classic Pro running through my pedalboard, then the Mesa TT-800 into the Schroeder 1210.
Distortion like you read about. I was devastated. All the pedals were turned off, bypassing everything.
After the first set I took the board out of the path, direct to the amp. Distortion was gone.
I did not expect that from a board with nothing on. It's been a little embarrassing frankly, chasing my tail with this whole speaker distortion thing, lol. I gotta bring my stress level down.
I'll be looking at using the effects loop, as well as trying one pedal at a time this weekend. I wouldn't mind having fewer pedals.
A new system sure enough puts me through it.

You mean you never thought of Pacers as classic muscle cars?

Most don't like them, but I thought Gremlins were cool. AMC did a great job with those. I'm not sure what the were thinking with the Pacer.

Does the Subway sound very different from the Carbine if set flat? Looks like the Subway has more tonal options. If I were rich and foolish I would have several Mesa heads (in addition to what I have).

Been listening to SRV about every night when I go to bed. I'm still amazed. Looking back, I can't believe I was fortunate enough to see him twice.

It's not difficult to play or get the right tone if you have the right bass and a tube amp. Re eq your amp and use only the bridge pickup, not the Mudbucker, it sounds perfect for copping Andy Fraser, good for adventures with Cream's catalog as well.

Well, I have more than several amps and cabs, (way too many) as well as high quality somewhat vintage basses (all but two are Fender or Gibson). You don’t have to be rich, just foolish with good credit.

Thankfully I’m not carrying and credit card debt around all this, but I don’t have substantial savings either. I only hope I will get a good amount back (obviously not all) of what I have in it, eventually. I get nervous that I may be stuck with all this stuff and not be able to move it when I’m ready to let go of it. Someday I will need to severely downsize. Being in two bands helps me justify some of it.

Ugh: strings arrived:
My ‘Bird left Akron Ohio, and is supposed to be here (in Cali) tomorrow by end of day.
Hope the d’Addarios on it are useable : I don’t want to go to a gig with unsettled strings.

More frustrating FedEx news, my bird is in Illinois as of 6AM local time. I’m hoping the bird takes flight (rather than the ground transport it’s obviously been thus far, being as it started in VA Monday, and by Today it had only reached Illinois)
If so it may land in SF this AM and POSSIBLY arrive today, likely tomorrow. Crap.

4 cabs (LabSeries L4 215, Ampeg BXT115, PJB C-8, Fender Rumble 200 115 - head removed)

Most obtained through a mix of gig money and horse trading/ refurbish/ upgrade and resell.
Always scouring local market for really good deals.

The Bird was purchased from gig funds up to this point this year.

$566 shipped with case, 2019 Epi Vintage Pro with one small ding. I hope deal is as good as it seems.

It is a different animal. Lots of options on both.

The Carbine has more immediate in your face slam. I have heard anecdotally that the Subway head that comes close to it is the 800+. The Subway channel on the TT can get there, but I haven’t really chased it.

Learning Tommy Shannon's version of "The Sky Is Crying" has taken me the better part of a year to play halfway competently.

Oh, that’s a ways out.

I’m currently up above Sonora for couple more days, 2 1/2 hours or so away from home. We pass by a bit north of there on the way up and back. Family owns a nice little cabin right at the edge of the forest, last house on one of the lasts roads at the end of the main road coming up. I get to come here when the SO is on break from working at a school. The spring break is perfect usually, since it’s not too hot or too cold. We bring the cat and he loves it here, the carpeted stairs are his playground.
