Thunderbird Club

Just FYI, that's a Vintage Pro, not a Pro. The Pro was an active bass with completely different pickups from any other Thunderbird, and 4 controls in typical diamond layout.
But congratulations! Great basses, and that looks beautiful in white.
Ah ok thanks. Yeah all the models kind of sound similar.

Hello,
I have a beautiful white Epiphone Tbird Pro coming to me in the mail. One of the early ones with rosewood fretboards.
Whats the deal with the probucker pickups? I had originally intended to put EMG PJ pickups in it as a stage bass but Ill consider the probuckers if they do the same thing. I have my 91 Gibson bone stock that I will die with so this one was intended to be the modding bass.
Also, is there a source for a gold bridge for these basses? I know the rex brown Epiphone Tbird has all gold hardware and I wonder if they are transferable.
Pic from the listing as proof-
Thank you

Nice VP. The white ones are pretty scarce. IMO, leave it as is. There is no two point drop in replacement that comes in gold, or in any finish for that matter, that I’m aware of. The first gen Probuckers are ok; I find them thin on the bottom but others love them. I much prefer the Gibson Vintage Reissues for a more authentic vintage 60’s Thunderbird humbucker tone.

I’m not a fan of EMG in general. But that’s JMO. Are you thinking of putting the EMG Thunderbird TMP in the neck position and the TMJ in the bridge position for a basic Thunderbird PJ? Should work if that’s what you want, although you would need to run them active AFAIK.

Congrats on the VP. "Whats the deal with the probucker pickups?" They are as close to the original 60s as you can get without serious money on boutique pickups. Weakness is they are a little shy in the lows, which is more or less noticeable depending on your rig. But as I often say, amps and a special knob that will easily fix that. I have Ampeg heads and cabs and lows have never been a problem, and I like plenty.

That said, you have a fantastic bass. The build quality on the early one's is really nice on virtually all of them. Best Thunderbird from Gibson/Epi since the 60s hands down. Everybody likes to do their own thing, but as a decades long owner of a '64 Thunderbird, modding it with different pickups would never cross my mind.

Looks great. Couldn't help but wonder if a floor leveler with some latex for adhesion would have been easier? May have been more work, just less dust or not a good application there. And it's been a really long time since I have had to think about such things, and products have no doubt changed drastically. At least you are making visible progress and it looks great.
Floor level was not the answer on this. The house is a Carter Sparks Modern designed for the Streng Brothers. Mine is a cooy of the Streng built by Benson and Ceder. Its better built than a Streng. Some dummy filled the open sections of the atrium to do the entire house in carpet before i got the house. The house was originally carpet so all involved with the concrete work did not care about mating up the flat slab to the exposed agragate. I could have spent a few hours making corrections , but the agragate was dirty and its not really doable to pressure wash in the house so i ground it flat and sealed it so i can clean it. Im a bit af a neat freak.

It might fit, and they have a gold option.

An EMG P/J set would likely be a downgrade from the 760’s. I have that same bass, color and all. I also have a number of actual Gibson ‘birds, and the Epiphone has its own sound compared to the my Gibsons. The Gibsons in my stable all have some form of vintage style boutique Thunderbird pickup, such as, the actual Gibson vintage re-issue pickups, Lollar, Novak, Gemini UK, and Thunderbucker 66’s. The Epiphone VP sounds very different than all those.

I believe the post spacing on those is wider than on the VP IIRC. Someone here may know for sure. Scott maybe?

At least the dog doesn't seem to care.

I think it will fit, but you would have to change the inserts because the Philadelphia luthier supply studs are Imperial.
The PL inserts also have a larger diameter so the holes would need to be enlarged or find Imperial inserts to match the diameter to match the holes in the Epi.
