They were still producing them on order.
IIRC the story behind it that Lloyd told me over lunch one day, the stack of Mahogany got dropped off accidentally at the Fender Ave skunk works BEFORE G&L was yet a thing, along with the Alder that was the actual order by the lumber supplier. Leo was upset because he did NOT get his complete order of the alder. So he got the Hog and got the rest of the order fulfilled without any additional charges.

.
It sat unused until G&L got ramped up.
Any early Music Man Stingrays that had a Hog body (while EB was contracting production though Dale and Forrest) were from that mistaken “free wood”
When EB / Leo relationship soured it again sat unused. Primarily because the finishing process for the hog differs from alder due to the necessary grain filling which took more time and effort.
Early on shortly after G&L partnership launched, where Leo techically still had a Fender 10 year non compete in effect with CBS, A retailer (I’ve forgotten the name) wanted an exclusive run of Hog instruments.
Leo of course accommodated, with an upcharge. Then at the following NAMM show he brought an example of an L1000 and a Broadcaster. It generated such interest that it became a “secret menu “ item for dealers.
So since it was special order, Hog was still in the lumber room until I left shortly before Leo’s debilitating stroke.
