Thunderbird Club

Welcome to the Middle East weekend.

Reading the last guy's opinion (not JimmyM), Sure, yeah, P-basses are just fine. But they aren't the go-to for the vast majority of modern players and there are very, very few actual name players out there in today's music business who use one as their primary bass.

I find this to be conjecture stated as fact. (Common problem.) While people now have many options, this dude is seeing different things than I do.
I suspect it depends on genre and locale. I see Pbasses played around Austin, but more not-Pbasses played.

Just a couple 65’s… you know, talkin about old guy stuff. Crazy how different these two are. My 65 Jazz with Labella flats is a smooth, silky, funky little bass. The Tbird, on the other hand, is this big growly plank that just screams with these super polished labellas. Sigh. I like roto 66’s, and will play them if they fit, but these Labella IMA’s are just amazing on this t bird. Wish I could make them fit somehow. Maybe an aftermarket stop piece?

How do they not fit?

I played a couple. They worked fine but didn’t inspire me, feel that great, or sound that great. (They were fine, just not great.)
I haven't recorded in a studio since the early 70's(Criteria, FWIW), but I've heard that some sound engineers want a PBass for the session 'cos they know how to EQ for it. Move some controls, dummy.

You don't want to modify that Thunderbird, that's a 9-10K bass in today's market.

Well, not permanently. I’ll use any bridge parts that are reversable and let me play the strings I want in tune
A wide string winding on the ball end of a B string that won’t go in the hard tail slot is a common issue on Warwick basses. I’ve had good luck putting the winding in a vice (or gently using a hammer) and flattening it a bit so it’s narrow enough to fit the slot. You might give that a try.
