Thunderbird Club

...still working...

But if you don't like the looks you just don't and I definitely get it.

Really don’t like how they look. I have a whole bunch of basses that look awesome (to me) and sound fantastic.

I was that way for a long time. Now I have four. And I like them. But reverses are my #1a and #1b.

As much as I don’t care for the look of the NR, I think the regular Thunderbird is the best looking bass design from headstock to bottom strap pin.

Very little tempts me beyond an original reverse right now but ... what do you reckon that three pickup is worth?
Here's a "Rare" Red one at a much better price, I like LA Guns and Kelly Nickels, but that bass isn't worth the extra $$$

The 3 pickup is rare, I don't know the production totals but it can't be many. I think George's is in better shape than this one and he paid less.
I could see maybe 4.5 -5K

IIRC Gibson made about six of these custom shop three pickup basses in 1991. Two in red, two in white and two in black I think.
So very very rare. That said, I paid less than half of what that reverb seller is asking for his cardinal red CS Tbird, and yes, I think mine is in better shape. Mine did come with a non stock Babicz bridge (which is probably an upgrade) but I pulled it off and bought a gold three point to bring it back to stock (darn hard to find a gold three point BTW, I lucked out on an eBay sale for that).

As for the bass - fit and finish are great, the color is to die for, very in your face bright red, nice low action, plays effortlessly. The control layout is a bit bizarre- three pups connected to two volumes, two tone controls and a pickup selector. Mine is wired neck volume + neck tone in switch position one; mid and bridge pup pickup volume and tone in switch position 2; and bridge pickup solo volume and tone in switch position 3. The resulting sound is very mid focused , I suspect largely because of the switching options, but the La Bella Deep Talkin Gold Flats may be driving the flavor as well. I’m not convinced this is the standard switching, I seem to recall a different switching layout on others I’ve seen. I’m a very bottom end focused guy but this bass just sounds so nice in a mix I’d be hesitant to change anything about it.

If you think you can get the price into the $3000ish bracket you should jump on it. Absolutely a collector bass with its rarity but also a great playing bird with its cutting mids. Would make a great studio bass, but might be a bit rare for a gigging bass.

Heres mine with the new bridge and Gold flatwounds…

and oddly enough, I think they look kinda goofy.....like a restrained Explorer.....to each their own I guess....
