Another electronics question (for my Thunderbirds).
Can you take a bass amp (Ampeg v-4b reissue which can go from 8 down to 2 ohm) and use a 4ohm cab--but connect to the 8ohm tap instead of 4 to cut back on the natural volume? I know in some cases you can mismatch, but not sure if it's OK with a tube head and the Ampeg in particular. I was thinking this would make the vols not so sensitive. Ok idea or beyond stupid?

GPF has a couple to choose from. Since EMG specifically told me .2 uF, that’s what I was trying to find. .22 uF is what I got.
lol... by the time you throw in the 20% tolerance of most Z5U ceramic dielectrics you're back to square one....wouldn't sweat the small stuff or what EMG tells you.....could be wrong but sounds like a generic blanket statement to get the non-techie types as close as possible...

I always thought (and still practice) the following:

Equal or greater than rated load is ok. Lower than rated is bad.

8 ohm cab to 4 ohm amplifier speaker output is ok (higher impedance)

4 ohm cab to 8 ohm amplifier speaker output is bad (lower impedance).

I have always thought lower or no impedance is bad for the amp.

Your example would be lower impedance than what the amp wants to see…. I seem to think that’s bad. Maybe someone can confirm?

Thanks. Maybe Chuck was answering the last question about is being a really stupid idea. So what you say makes sense.

I've always just matched ohm ratings and never mismatched. Your thought many pages ago about a different cab for the Ashdown got me to wondering. I know some are are ok and others not, but was never sure because I never needed to know before.

unlike SS amps tube types are way more tolerant to shorted outputs...although you will notice sonic differences, running a 4 Ohm cab from a tube output transformer 8 Ohm tap will only (aside from sonic response) alter the amount of power (less with a mismatch) delivered to the speaker...
 
I would retire tomorrow if I could.

Feels like time is moving faster, that's all. I am thankful for where I am in life and very appreciative for all that I have. Work is a major stressor in life so will be happy when I can put that behind me. But I have learned to allow myself to be happy and I want to stay in that headspace for the rest of my time here. Glad to know you as well!
Time is relative (at least in perception) and moves quicker with age. That's because each second is a fairly small part of your (experienced) life as a child, but a tiny fraction once you're well into so-called adulthood.
