Thunderbird Club

My daily driver is a 2014 (last year for the naturally aspirated V8 engine) Cayenne GTS, love it and love how it handles with the GTS package, much better than the newer V6 twin turbo Cayennes. They’ve just recently reintroduced the V8, so I might be tempted to buy a newer one when this one wears out. My backup car is a Boxster S and is currently up for sale, might already be sold if the verbal deal doesn’t fall through. Then there’s my fun car, a 1997 911 (last full model year for the air cooled Porsches), just a classic and good looking car in a relatively rare zenith blue (shifts from blue to violet in the sun)…

As much as I love my Porsches I sure do drool over the new Vette body style. The C6 is certainly no slouch on the track when fitted with the proper upgrades, yours sure sounds nice!
Yeah, the newer Vettes look like Vettes!

Beyond stupid at every level. I wonder when the while vintage thing will run its course? When I talk to folks in their 20's who play (my son's friends) they only a passing interest in vintage stuff and certainly not much interest in paying premium for it.
It will be interesting to see what happens with vintage instruments.
I know there are lot of people with big $ in restored cars, that probably won't recover it.

What are your thoughts on the new Gibson Thunderbird? Personally I find it hard to get excited about it:

- flipped headstock (meh)
- new bridge (YES)
- MM style humbuckers (meh)
- glued neck (meh)
Flipped headstock - ok by me, but the previous one was just fine as it was.
New bridge - new one works as good as the old one and adds string spacing to boot
MM style Humbuckers - these are DiCola pickups, quite different from MM pups. Not my favs, but that’s personal preference.
Glued neck - bolt, set or thru necks all work fine. IMHO set strikes a nice balance, solid as a rock yet easy to replace if broken.
I do wish they had more color choices

Wrong headstock and put the logo on the TRC dammit!

It's a good bridge, addresses decades of complaints about the 3 point.

Decola pickups are good. I would have preferred chrome or nickel covers.

The neck through is cool, but set neck is less labour, and they did well with the new NR - so they are repeating the process.

I'm surprised to hear some are light, because it looks like the wings are thicker

I prefer the original HS shape but like the smaller size.
I’m a big Supertone bridge fan.
I like the idea of the DiCols pickups but would prefer to have the switching options of the 2015 model.
I’ve not found any noticeable difference in neck type (my first bird was a bolt-on, my Grecos are set neck, the rest are body through).

I like it and would be more likely to consider one if Gibson made them in a color I would want.

Thanks for that , l had only seen a red G3 on the Fly Guitars site before. Fairly rare as l recall.

My first bass was an 81 tobacco sunburst, which probably would have remained my number one had the headstock not kept coming unglued.

It never broke, just came unglued. After three attempts at repair l gave up and bought a Jazz bass.

And it's a great J , but it can't touch my old G3 for recording.
Sorry to hear about the glue job. Did you try a couple sheetrock screws? Hopefully you still have it, and you can get a luthier to dowel pin it like the Thunderbird headstock repairs I've seen here on the club. It has to be repairable, or you could get an Epi reissue and rob the neck off of it. Jazz basses have nice necks and are used a lot, I have a few, don't hold it against me Miles. This one pictured has Lollar Thunderbird pickups installed, its neck it on a P-Bass, for the moment.

It was mentioned that as a new member you have to pass around that Lull for each of us to confirm it's legit status, right?

Thunderbirds are necessary here--and an odd (normal here) sense of humor.
Okay, it's all boxed up and you're first on the list.
I'll take your number, I'll take it down
What's your address, I'll write it down
I'll be in touch, so don't leave town in a big black car!

Anybody that gigged Peavey Mk head and cab in the 70s and early 80s is alright by me! I stupidly got rid of my Mk III (don't miss the 2x15 cab though I loved it).
I stupidly did the same thing. I've regretted most sales and trade-ins that I've have done. I switched to playing guitar in my second band and sold it to my roommate, bass player. I think he still has it along with a 70's P-Bass and my girlfriend. I sure do miss her, the amp that is!

I know you’re joking. But just the thought of someone doing that really gets me riled up.
Yah... it's a thing that happens all too often. Someone assumes they will get more money "parting out" a vintage instrument than just selling it "as is"/whole. One: it's their property so they can do what they want with it regardless of... anything, And two: it sucks. Not much anyone can do about it.

I drool more over your 1997 911. That is a beautiful iconic car it looks great in that rare zenith blue, highly desirable and worth a fortune. It has some nice wide Pontenza rubber on it. I squeezed some 325/35/20 Toyo R888's under mine, I head home at the first sign of rain, the R888's are a racetrack tire with not many groves for rain, hydroplaning would be an issue.
