Always liked the Bond movies, but I was checking craigslist for "bass player wanted" opportunities (which are usually dismal ~) and saw Cherie's post for Bond Girl. I thought - that would be cool and instantly contacted her. Before my audition I boned up on every Bond song I could find. It's also when I started playing primarily with a pick ala Carol Kaye. I did as well as I could at the audition and didn't hear from her. I finally called and asked if I was in or out - in, and going on 12 yrs. Paul & I are the only original members at this point having lead guitarists and drummers leave/change over time. Playing those songs taught me a lot about how a quality bass-line happens in a song both compositionally and feel-wise. I've played many of the same songs hundreds of times over those 12 years and never get tired of playing them. Aside from one - the full Dr No. We only do it for multiple set gigs, we usually start Dr No and bridge into Goldfinger. Dr No is iconic Bond, but IMO a bit redundant as a song.

Hi all,

New to the Thunderbird life, but not new to bass. Have an army of Fenders, but was gifted this 2006 made in Korean Epiphone that I want to give a different vibe to. I have Hipshot ultralights on the way for tuning machines and the Hipshot SuperTone bridge coming as well, both in nickel. I would like to give it that 1964 T-Bird aka John Entwistle type sound but am having a hard time picking what could be deemed as period accurate replica pickups. I’m trying to keep my budget on pickups around $400-$600. I’ve looked at Lollar and Novak but I don’t really know how to pick pickups for this baby to meet my tone goals. Any suggestions?

I threw some strings on my bass while I wait for them to be made and all of the electronics are crackly and crap, including the input jack. I plan to replace everything.

Anyone know the standard spec of a ‘64 t-bird for the pots and capacitor?

I threw some strings on my bass while I wait for them to be made and all of the electronics are crackly and crap, including the input jack. I plan to replace everything.

Anyone know the standard spec of a ‘64 t-bird for the pots and capacitor?

Generally from my understanding, 500k audio taper pots. Either .022 or .047 capacitor depending on who you ask.

That will likely turn out to be one of the coolest Epi bolt-on upgraded Thunderbirds ever. So cool! The SDs are highly regarded. It’ll sound awesome!

Naw, he was beyond cool. He really drove a Porsche 917 in Le Mans, a Fastback Mustang in Bullitt, a motorcycle in The Great Escape and played Cool Hand Luke. Total Badass.

It's a good overview of the man - totally a 'my way or the highway' dude. The woman (Zöe) stunt person in the doc was in Tarantino's "Death Proof" doing some amazing stunt-work.

If you are truly trying to replicate an original 1964 IV (I did with a VP using the SD custom shop pickups), then you will likely need to re-route the bridge pickup to bring it closer to the neck (maybe something with the neck pickup as well depending on your donor model). See the pickup measurements in the Wiki. @Engle 3D printed a special spacer that covered the ~1/2" gap. Since my VP donor is black, the larger spacer isn't noticeable.
