Thunderbird Club

I think I need to replace the Tokai. I've loved it for years, but after getting the classic pro, I get grumpy whenever I go back to the massive neck on that particular bird - I just find it difficult to move around quickly enough having had things made so easy by the slim neck on the classic.
I quite like Colin's idea of getting another classic pro and modding it with a bad bird and maybe some chinabuckers (or thunderbuckers if I'm feeling rich).
Chrome up the TB+s out of the Classic pro, covers are cheap as chips from the Philadelphia luthier supplies

These are the ones I did on my Bumperbird

Love the look of that bass, Was that a self build?

Also lusting after your rack (of stereo equipment). Been years since I've had a good stereo. I was really into hifi in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. I went the whole 4 channel route early on then replaced it with 4.1 surround and later 5.1 and eventually with 7.1 surround. About 5 years ago I said enough is enough with the constantly changing formats, media and surround protocols so I gave my entire system away with the sale of the house. Fast forward to today - I miss my stereo!

Yes, I built it last autumn, I posted some build pics up at the time

I love my hifi, living out in the wilds of north Wales live bands aren't that easy to get to see so the record player makes up for it. Mind you it's an interest I seem to have taken to extremes, you could buy a small house for what that set up cost at the time. If your interested it's as follows: Michelle Orb turntable, SME V arm, Dynovector XX2 mk2 cartridge, Naim Prefix cartridge amp, Naim 52/ supercap pre amp, 2 x Naim 135 power amps, Naim CD5i CD, Pardo supercap powering the digital side of the CD and the Prefix, Naim NACA 5 speaker cable and Focal micro utopia speakers. The rest of it is just TV crap, I used to have a Naim AV2/150 for the surround sound thing but these days we just use a cheap soundbar

Sounds like a very nice rig! I might have to get back into it again some day, if I do you'll be the first one I reach out to.

Whippets are amazing little animals. They are also a little hyper, as you might expect. Greyhounds look like whippets, but they are completely low key. It's like they know how fast they are and don't have any urge to prove it. If my wife was less opposed to animals with more than two legs in the house, a rescue greyhound would be on the list. But, we have enough fuzz that settles on everything as it is, plus she's not a fan of animals. Aside from the Cro-magnon sort, which she tolerates well enough.

Neither him indoors or myself are what you would call dog people and a dog would require a back yard, not a balcony ... and there's the whole thing of walking around with wee bags of hot dogs1t, so it more than likely will never happen.

Yeah, they get pretty good press in the bang for the buck category...
Best turntable hi-fi system for £3000

Once you convert to Tannoy dual concentric monitors you'll never go back. The Prestige monitors might look like an oversized 1930s radio, but they sound sublime (the price is pretty out there as well). I'm considering 'downsizing' from separate pre/power to an integrated amp as well. The current pre is pretty much an empty box with an over-specced switched volume control.

In the 1980's when I was running in stereo I had a McIntosh 275 that sounded great. When I switched over to quad and then all the following surround sound variations I switched to integrated amps. Had NAD, Yamaha, Marantz and a few other popular brands. Might just be feeling nostalgic but I never did find an amp that sounded as good as my McIntosh 275. But the integrated amps really were the more practical way to go. Don't know if that's still true since I haven't bought any hifi stuff for almost 20 years.

Not sure WHAT made me (possibly the first of a few scotch on the rocks after a long week ) but I wanted to see which of the ebony '79 Birds, I ridiculously own, has the narrowest neck.
It wasn't even close. One was actually a little bulky (for a TB), three were what you'd expect (kinda like a Fender Jazz) and one...one was ridiculous. Almost toy-like (or, like an old VOX bass). Now, I have not the longest fingers, but this one is ridiculous.

Finally keen to replace the Dual turntable that my Dad bought in the late 70s... the auto drop and finish functions haven't worked for many years, hence I've played 2-3 records total since about 1990. I've been getting the itch to get some of my old records out again lately.

It seems pointless to search around for a repair (I did try years ago and people looked at me as if I had 2 heads even then); so... are Audio Technica decent?

My only suggestions would involve a second mortgage on your house.
