Thunderbird Club

Based off my very limited experience, i find that the Hipshot is an improvement all around, got mine used, but is in great shape.
I think you'll like it very much PillO.
I liked what you said about the resonance.

Do they make it in black? Realistically it won't be an upgrade I would be doing any time soon on my budget. Since I have no problems with using the 3 point, and can't justify the cost.

In borat voice, and being too lazy to look it up myself, "Ver nice! How much?!"

New you can find them for around $100 give or take, mine was 75 used, but i have seen them even cheaper in the used market.
They pop up here once in a while, but they go fast.
The cost of the "upgrade" was worth it to me, because, i think the Epi Classic Pro is just a great bass, and i didn't pay much to begin with when i did the trade.
But i hear ya on the budget thing.

JR - IIRC you have an Epi. Did the Hipshot bridge fit over the raised flange on the stud inserts or did you have to modify the inserts? Also important to note that the Epi has metric threads and the Gibby doesn't I think.

Dropped right in, no modding required, was very easy.
It fit right over the raised flange, the Hipshot has, how do you say, indented holes, so to speak, that allow for the flange.
The bridge came with both metric and Gibson screws to fit either threads, so you can mount to either bass.

Zappa's nice, most of the time he flashes clips es of Rock n Roll at the right moment, so the listener feels home and safe again.

Sitting through Trout Mask Replica was a whole different experience.

I hear how they align (if that's the right word) but otherwise you couldn't have 2 more polar opposites. (Don and Frank) I personally like the Captain more, but that's probably the artist in me.

The way I see it, 3/4 of my peavey collection each cost less than a hipshot bridge lol. My latest steal was 1987 mahogany foundation for $80 for instance. Makes it hard to spend that on a bridge for my Thunderbird. But in the future I might. But I like the black hardware and pickup covers on the arctic white bass, good contrast. If I had a black one or sunburst I would consider chroming it out. Good to know I can get a black hipshot in the future.

Makes sense. I can't argue with that now, good deals you got there Ub.

On another note, stuff for the Henry J gripes... The whole Shavo Warwick thing was on my mind again so I dug deeper and confirmed that it was not simply because gibson isn't making thunderbirds anymore, but the whole shavo signature model that ended up getting dropped, really pissed off Shavo, and that was back in 2010 I think. So he switched to Warwick. Perhaps the delayed reaction had to do with his endorsement contract, since he was playing his silver custom birds in 2015, but there was obvious paint wear from his picking so they weren't fresh new basses for that tour.

Good thing I have a 4 string Warwick in the aresenal, too bad it isn't a streamer body shape though.

So Henry J has alienated a huge band that loved Gibson basses, has millions of fans, and while a USA Gibson Shavo model might not sell in the numbers of a fender Geddy Lee Jazz, a limited run would have had some customers. But think of all the kids and budget conscious people who would have bought the epiphone version?! Henry J is running Gibson into the ground and Hans Peter Wilfer now has yet another major bassist on the Warwick roster.

Way to go Henry!

But someone like Joe Bonamassa can have signature everything including a Les Paul with a Firebird headstock :banghead:
Henry J needs to get his $#!+ together

The Captain had his own party going on, dug him very much as well. still do.

There's a good multi-part doc about him on youtube with guys like David Lynch (another favorite) speaking about him. Don Van Vliet was a very complex human. I know a woman (artist/musician) who is a version of him - she's like a kaleidoscope that's always turning.
