Thunderbird Club

So this whole limited run thing, what is a 2018 Thunderbird going to be?
The same thing we've seen up till 2015, or will it have different pickup's then the TB+'s?. Custom colors?
And will it be a top notch bass, we can only guess on what the pricing will be, doubt very highly i will be able to afford one.
The vaporware Thunderbird. Except that vaporware is an announced product. I don't think any thunderbirds have been announced for 2018. Better plan on that Les Paul. Or maybe a Joe bonamosa firebird. Or perhaps a geddy Lee jazz bass?

I doubt there will be much from Gibson in 2018 with four fat strings and 34" scale length.

Unless something new has come up.

Some interesting news that comes from Chris Dekker, who writes for the Dutch magazine "Die Bassist" regarding Gibson basses for 2018.
This come from his post over on Last Bass Outpost which is still the best place for Gibson related info.

Well, the buzz going around from the LBO was that, there are going to be some Birds.

Ooooh, look at that: Thunderbird strap locks.

Sigh. Lusting after cheap, shiny, little blingy things like this always makes me feel like a drunken man whore with thirteen dollars in his pocket stalking Zippo lighter vendors at the county fair. Which I know nothing about, of course.

That’s cute. I’m way into my LOXX strap locks, though, other than their being completely useless if you don’t have your strap with you.

I’m unhappy about not putting the felt rings between the bass and the strap pins, though. I don’t remember them coming with the felt, but still. I don’t want to take them out and put them back in just to put on the felt, though. I’d be afraid of not getting a right fit again. Like with the truss rod cover. I know, toothpicks.

On another note, stuff for the Henry J gripes... The whole Shavo Warwick thing was on my mind again so I dug deeper and confirmed that it was not simply because gibson isn't making thunderbirds anymore, but the whole shavo signature model that ended up getting dropped, really pissed off Shavo, and that was back in 2010 I think. So he switched to Warwick. Perhaps the delayed reaction had to do with his endorsement contract, since he was playing his silver custom birds in 2015, but there was obvious paint wear from his picking so they weren't fresh new basses for that tour.

Good thing I have a 4 string Warwick in the aresenal, too bad it isn't a streamer body shape though.

So Henry J has alienated a huge band that loved Gibson basses, has millions of fans, and while a USA Gibson Shavo model might not sell in the numbers of a fender Geddy Lee Jazz, a limited run would have had some customers. But think of all the kids and budget conscious people who would have bought the epiphone version?! Henry J is running Gibson into the ground and Hans Peter Wilfer now has yet another major bassist on the Warwick roster.

Way to go Henry!

Bad press should go a long way I would think, as in public figures being very public with their disappointment with Gibson and switching to other companies.

Sounds promising. @wolfkeller can get a new lefty or 3 ;)

Not sure how public it is. I found it on a Facebook fan page (victims of a down) and apparently the admins know the band or otherwise have insider info.

Maybe I can ask the man myself someday. But I don't know how asking about a breakup with Gibson will go over, and I wouldn't want to make a bad impression.

But I am really good at making bad impressions. Just ask John Sykes or Lux Interior (might need a good medium to ask Lux). Yep, I touched John's guitar, while he was wearing it during soundcheck, you should have seen the look on his face!. Someone told me, never touch John's guitars (after the fact).

Kevin Bacon liked me though. Different day, Different venue, different vibe.

I'm a little intimated when i see that dark blue banner you've got there.
But i fully respect it. And i agree, we do all seem to keep it together.

Regarding Gibson basses for 2018 I will say that the source of the info, Chris is an acquaintance and he's always had the info correct. Gibson hasn't ever announced limited runs of basses in the past and I wouldn't expect that to change, so the best course of action is to work with a good, reputable dealer and tell them what you want and to get it ordered - When I wanted a Nikki Sixx Mk.II I went to Wildwood Guitars and they chased it down and made it happen. Much as I like dealing with Sweetwater, it was the right way to get that specific bass.

Has anyone seen this yet? There was one similar not long ago, same seller, i think. my concern would be the machine heads, wouldn't the edges of the tuners touch while tuning?
Looks great though. May be a slight bit pricey................?

Gibson Thunderbird Bass 2014 Natural - Seymour Duncan Pickups
Yes it is pricey. GC was blowing out 2014s for $799 in 2015, but they went real fast. Do you think that is walnut? The 2014 blowout was available in natural walnut, and ebony (black) finishes. Or were there natural finish mahogany birds offered in 2014 as well?

This group talks about thunderbuckers, lulls, lollars and chinabuckers, but I don't remember much talk about Duncan's in the 10 or so months I have been here. Are they anything special? The hardware and pickup upgrades are notable, but we all know they don't add much resale value to basses, unless someone specifically wants those upgrades. In 40 years people on TB will be rolling their eyes at that one for not being all original ;)

Good question on the walnut, not well versed enough to know. I have no experience with those Duncan's, but hear they are really good.
But it's the price that's over the top.

Nikki sixx blackbird, and a real USA Gibson is surely a legit Thunderbird. And don't have any qualms about adding normal controls to it, it is routed for them and many club members do it. If done right and in the same way a normal Thunderbird is, it shouldn't hurt value too much, except maybe to a crue collector. There is so much more to the world of bird than both pickups full up. The tone can come or go, I always have mine cranked, but the ability to use pickups solo or different blend levels is a must. Just a slight tweak to 80% on the neck brings in a nice high mid bump (kills the scoop inherent to both pickups on full), and doing the opposite with the bridge down to 80% does the same in a low mid bump, very throaty. And you could keep the switch motif and wire it VV + series/parallel switch for even more power. I haven't done that to mine (I'd use a push pull if I did, rather have it be reversible if I wanted), mine being a classic pro or Goth, I don't have a blackbird, but if I got one I would at least VV it.

After much thought and consideration while communing with my bird in the basement I've decided to go for it and get the VVT modification done. Just got off the phone with my favorite local guitar shop owner and he said he'll add two 500k audio potentiometers (which I think is just another way of saying 'logarithmic') for volume of each pick up, and one 250K tone (linear) potentiometer with a .022MF capacitor. I like the idea of switching neck/bridge/both pickups but at the same time the thought of a fourth hole in my bird doesn't feel very good.

We didn't talk about $$$ but if the work is perfect I'll gladly pay for it. I don't have any reason to think it won't be perfect, but I'm going to bring a picture of exactly what I expect to see when he's done.

Having a little anxiety about dropping it off tomorrow... so wish me luck.
