That's for sure! I had to look at it real good after playing it to make sure it wasn't a medium scale bass. But the reach was def a long-scale. It was slightly disorienting.

I always found it pleasantly surprising how much shorter the reach is on the Thunderbird than other basses I’ve played, because of the way it falls.

Let me explain something to all that are interested - I am a member 1st of TB and also a member of this "club" - because I own a '64 T-bird, because I used to own a '63 T-bird which was stolen - my first serious bass I owned in the mid 70's. I am on this thread, in this club for one entry reason - and I just described it. As a member of TB and of this club, I will not stand for snide little "I'm sorry I posted that" BS related to politics, which if you want some easy reading will be spelled out in TB rules. Not cute, not funny - not allowed here for a reason.

Hey, I have an idea - how about we talk about what brings us all together on this great thread, you remember - Thunderbirds in various and sundry renditions. I'm getting all the parts together to play Dr Frankenstein on my Goth, should have everything I need by next week.

Anybody curious about orange drop caps vs ceramic vs paper and oil for your TBird tone? Well, I have half a dozen different value orange drops as well as a .047 Emerson and .047 ceramic cap I'll be clipping in and out of the test rig to see which one sounds best.

I'll be installing dual coil Bart's in place of the Goth pups and splitting coils. Will series sound better than parallel, and which single coil on each pup will sound best? A trim ring may be needed for the new pups, I have a line on a custom supplier, will it be worth it or are they junk? Can I fit push/pull pots in a thin body Goth to avoid the need for toggles like the 2015 bird uses?

How about that anemic looking rosewood board. Will India ink stain it Ebony black or will it just end up a sticky mess? Will the ink stick to the inlay?

I have a very slight dead spot at the A# spot of the D string. If I change the headstock mass with ultralight tuners will the dead spot move, get worse or go away?

How will La Bella Black tapes sound on this bass?

And what about a leather pickguard, or maybe Tort (NOT).

When all is said and done I will have modified the tuners, the headstock, the fretboard, the nut, the body cavity, the pups, the controls, the knobs, the strings and the pickguard. About the only two things that will remain unchanged for now are the bridge and the straplocks. Yet it should still be instantly recognizable as a Goth bass.

So while I'm ripping it up feel free to chime in with a "what if you did this" comment or a "what's the real impact of that" comment. I'll try to post progress pics as well. Let's have fun together!

It seems reasonable to me, that you could measure the depth of the control cavity, then compare it to the specs found on a page such as this one:

Coulda gone for a couple of Alumitone Bass Bars. If ever get my paws on a Steinberger, it will get the Alumitone treatment.

It seems to me that the Goth neck is wide enough to consider for a 4-5 string conversion.
Maybe you need another neck. Otherwise, BEAD.

No, when I photographed his collection I decided against it, because I was afraid the book would be overcrowded with Thunderbirds. There was nothing special about that Thunderbird except for the added third pickup.
In hindsight I regret that decision. I could have placed it as an insert in a corner somewhere.

I tend to agree with Uwe... Somethings definitely fishy...

Even the old fake Gibson Discoverer Bass that JAE had looked more convincing - At least it did to JAE

I've exposed a ragged edge in my participation here before. I felt awful, apologized, and adjusted my communication as was suitable- because I like it here. I do also think that we're most likely all able to deal with small, unintended offences- and I'm not trying to test that.

If it's BS, what exactly? The post, or my follow-up? And what else do you want to say? Anyone else?

One of the recurring themes here when you guys speak about the bands you all play in is that good drummers are hard to come by and often times they are unreliable.

So I was doing a little research on Theory of a Deadman for tonight's show in Detroit. I'm pretty stoked about seeing them as it'll be a night out with my wife to enjoy dinner, drinks and music, of which, this is about as "hard" the rock can get for her to still enjoy it. Our last concert together was Counting Crows and Matchbox 20 to make the point clearer.

Anyway, I've enjoyed, ToaD whenever I've heard them played but don't own any of their music nor their history so I looked them up.

I'm surprised that they've been together 16 years and that their bass player, Dean Back, rocks a Gibson Thunderbird! Bonus and added awesomeness for tonight! Anyway, back to the drummer thing... they're on their 4th drummer and all the other members are original.

I got a real kick out of that so I thought I'd share it.

So here's a pic of Dean rockin' a TBird... sadly, I see he plays other basses as well.

One other thing I did not see coming at all, this EB 3 sounds like a pissed off beast!. I expected something warmer and more retro, I could see me playing this monster at angry speed in a hardcore band meanwhile Im trying to tame it down for progressive doom. What have I got myself into here?.

Just purely out of context, it was, to me, concise and right to the point of the whole "Escalated quickly" gag: The look on her face, the orange jumpsuit, prison... the surprising juxtaposition of it all. It wasn't about politics, it was simply the illustration of that sentiment. Cracked me up. I have not purposely involved politics with my socializing here, and I don't actually think bandying it about is constructive- nor is your insinuation.

I too don't like seeing anything even a bit political in here since it can go sideways quickly but that pic WAS funny and I got your point while understanding as you do now, that perhaps the foil of the meme would've been better to not be a politician of any stripe.

You do have friends here so don't get it all twisted in your head about how we feel about having you here and the awesome contributions you make to our Thunderous corner of Talk Bass.

Personally, I give folks here more room to be themselves since it has so little to do with real life and real interpersonal interactions. I can't imagine getting that upset about a meme...
