EDIT: Yes I own a StingRay, an elderly one with obsolete alnico pickup and 2 band EQ. Am I allowed to comment or do I have to own the exact model...and why would I do that?

I think owning the exact colour is also required.

Both of those, and the fact that The Thunderbird is what taught me that there's a whole world of greatness that lives in between the "highs" knob, and the "lows" knob on the EQ. This translates very differently through the Music Man & it's fancy high-falootin' eeelectonical system. I'll get there. It'll just take a while. I haven't really been able to spend a whole lotta time with it yet either. Been a li'l busy as of late...

Remind us again, what is the EQ setup? 2 or 3 band?

Rays strike me as instruments requiring a completely different approach to tone sculpting.

To my ears at least, the 2 band sounds fuller, like the older Stingers, the 3band sounds more modern if that makes any sense. I didn't like having a mid control, kinda like having a tone control, no use for it.

@theFixer - looks like the Ray is giving you fits. I'm a Ray man and have had about every configuration of the beast ever made. My preference is the preEB viariant with the two band preamp because it's so easy to get a good sound out of. But it looks like you have the newer three band model. If that's the case, what you'll find is the mid knob is constantly at odds with the bass and treble knobs. Outside of replacing the three band preamp with a two band model the next best thing is to set the mid knob at the halfway point or less, drop the treble knob down to 50% or less and bump the bass knob up to your taste. Make sure your amp is EQ'd at relatively neutral. It helps if you have the bass strung with non zingy strings - Black Beauties are my favorite.

For your return trip, you could come across Canadiadia, stopping to have a tall cold one with each of our Great Northern "Thunderbrethren". Then you could cut back Michigan way, & catch Larry V, Wolfkeller, and myself, then down to Ohio and/or Indiana for a couple stops before pulling back in yer own driveway (make sure to bring plenty of valium for the missus)

If any of my Thunderbird brethren make it over to Fenton, MI. I can promise a fun time of food, music and libations! I don’t even need much notice... I like to have fun!
