But there's a discussion on whether it's better to run your amp flat and then use your onboard electronics ... or do it the other way around.

It is always tempting to wander into such a conversation, propose something preposterous (like boost mids on the bass and scoop the head) with ridiculous justification then refuse to hear anything contrary and/or reply to the acrimony with the same ridiculous justification regardless of the question posed/objection voiced.

Commonly known as trolling. :roflmao:

I don't do it but I know it when I see it.

So typical genpop replies?

I think trolling has malicious intent. Mine is intended as comic relief. Unfortunately politicians of all stripes use the technique to the detriment to all.

I don't believe it has to be malicious... trolling for sh!ts and giggles. Yanking someone's chain can be very funny especially when they're the only one not seeing it.

I understand your point, but I beg to differ - they are out there - but they're ungainly large, rare, and expensive.

Yessiree! I love it, and will do it on my next 'bird(s) as well! One of my favorite things about the T-bird, is how reactive it is to small variances in how & where it's picked/plucked, and how the pups are blended. By adding the blend pot… I can now tweak that blend with one knob, instead of two, and increase/decrease the volume of a blended tone (again, with one knob). I know there's a lotta "set it & forget it" folks 'round these parts, to whom this would be a "big whoopty-doo :meh:"… but I LOVE it!

Only problem with this solution is: They don't make Reflector Knobs that says "Blend" on them... Only "Volume" and "Tone" are available...

Oh… I think you know the answer. It's cheap, and people buy into tube hype easily. Generally speaking… I would prefer tube pre AND tube power, but have a variety of limitations that keep that from being possible at the moment. I wouldn't hesitate to try force feeding a tube pre into a solid state amp if I thought I could get a more pleasing sound outa the deal… but I know there is no substitute for tube power, and wouldn't expect a "tube amp sound" under those circumstances. Just hope for "better". Music Man just found their own magic:)

You can use a small tube amp to feed a SS power amp. If the small tube amp gets the tone you want, then a good SS power amp will sound good with it. It still won't sound identical to a large tube power amp, because the tube characteristics in small tubes are never identical to the large ones. But you can get very close that way. Does anyone do that? No MFR does that, AFAIK.

My 72 Jazz. Sunburst with Tort. I was a Young Man then!
I'm guessing I owe you an apology, Kat. Ya remember that time in the mid '90s when you felt a bit "off" & just couldn't sleep? That was when I got that Jazz. It was a 3 tone sunburst with tort… bound maple neck & fretboard, with pearl blocks. I'm sorry… (although I wish I had it to sell now;))

Re the ABG's I have a Washburn AB20 an like it very much, depending on the show, venue and set list I use mine and it sounds great. Typically, I'll write the set list to have three songs together that it sounds good on, our guitarist also changes to her Tele for those songs. I've had mine since '97 or so and have always been happy to have it around.

Playing a show a big stage and great FOH, it's there with my '76 and '89.
