Thunderbird Club

I apologize if I poked a sore spot. They were just the first example of big haired '80's excess and attitude that leapt in my mind...
No harm done! On one hand, they are the definition of 80's excess, having made the Here I Go Again video that encapsulated the decade. On the other, they've always been a band of monster players and they write great songs that we bought by the truckload. They get some blame (which Coverdale has accepted in many interviews) but they have to get a lot of praise to go with it. Cheese is amplified in hindsight, but they sold eleventy billion records because at least at the time, people loved what they do. Sallgood!

Ported and sealed both have potential pros and cons (because every cab is a compromise of some sort), but I mostly play sealed cabs these days. Transient response and punch being the main factors

That's what i find an attribute to the 212AV. Ported, but sounds like a sealed cab. Quite a nice little package.

After picking up a PJB, briefcase, that made me a believer in those small cones too.
And the PJB's are even smaller @5 inches!
Likewise, these small cones sound great for DB, who woulda thought right?
They really seem to translate the 'air' that puff of the pluck attack so well.
Usually the super fast transients like that, seem to get lost in the larger cones.
And the smaller cones seem to be way more efficient overall as well.
Cool the way the Subway, fits perfectly atop that mini rig of doom too!

I use the Mesa Subway for upright gigs a lot. Really nice little amp!
On speaker size, I’m all over the place because the overall design to me is way more important than the size of the driver itself. Also, which speaker are we discussing? There’s a bunch of 10’s, 8’s, 15’s, etc., and they can sound VERY different from one another. My main cab these past few years has an 18” woofer and two 2” mid drivers in a sealed enclosure. Some would think the 18 would be ‘floppy,’ ‘boomy,’ ‘slow’ or whatever common misconceptions get thrown around about that size driver. In fact, by virtue of its design, my ‘1822’ cab is super tight, punchy and detailed. It’s all about the design :)

I thought it was a sealed cab the first time I heard one. I’ve never tried one on a gig, but they seem like pretty nice cabs to me. In fact, with the possible exception of the Heritage series, the 212AV is the only Ampeg cab I’d even consider. I make my own cabs, so it’s a moot point :)

Two of the best Peg cabs of today are the Heritage 810 and the 212AV. imo.

Originally I was tossing up between the PF210 and PF115 to go with with the PF500 magic smoke machine. Then I decided I wanted a 4Ω cab , which led me to the SVT212AV. I did look at other makers but in the end it was the best value for money, had stellar endorsements and it came at a discount. There was no chance to try it -- mine was the last in Australia and sitting in a warehouse in Melbourne 900km away.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to pop-in and see what's up! I just picked up my first T-bird from a local music shop a month or so ago. It's been my #1 since then! Is there anything important I've missed, since I can't comb through 3k+ pages of the thread :)
How does everyone feel about the new D-birds from Dingwall? Do they seem to measure up to the T-bird hype?
Glad to be here!
Welcome! I haven't been able to try the DBird yet, but I really wanna. I'm not tooooo much of a purist, so it's fan fretted unusualness really appeals to me. I don't have the funds for one, but if i do someday, I'm gonna look hard at it.

"Also, which speaker are we discussing?"
Just the smaller cones in general, as they relate to being a nice choice for DB's

"It’s all about the design."
Absolutely! there's no denying the awesomeness of an efficient speaker (regardless the size) when paired with an efficiently designed cab (again-regardless of the size)

Another thing that has recently been mentioned round here is the use of a high pass filter ala' the Thumpinator. I use one all the time, it's my constant end-of-chain charm.
I've been thinking about picking up an Fdeck HPF too. But I haven't been using the doghouse much lately (Norton custom Shen SB 100/innovation silver slaps/full circle/platinum pro) again, with the SFX at the end of the chain.
I also use a BSX Allegro. again it's been awhile.

I've been playing bass in church worship services for thirty years. It's very fulfilling.
That's cool. I am not a church-goer but my buddy, the guitar player, attends what I think is referred to as "the contemporary service" and it has a band. He always makes a point of telling me how good the bass player is there (hint: he's better than you, Steve).

This is purely anecdotal but I have noticed a good number of mentions of folks buying their gear for worship bands, when leaving their product review comments at online music retailer sites. It's great that folks have places, other than commercial venues, to channel their musical interests. And I think that there is probably a significant chunk of change pumped into gear sales as a result, which helps the struggling music industry in general.

I'm not a church goer as well, but to this note Steve, i have to give mention to @Dr. Cheese. He's a good bass player and plays in his church band. Seems to be a lot of good musicians at the house. He just doesn't have a ThunderBird.

I hope my comment didn't imply that worship band bass players weren't any good. Most bass players are better than me.

?....
I just did this...

Each 2x8 cab is 400 watts at 4ohms, so both would be 800 watts at 2ohms. That allowed me to try my Sunn Coliseum 300 at 2 ohms, which as it turns out, the Sunn LOVES being run at 2 ohms. Nearly twice as loud as the 4 ohm 212 sitting next to it. With both 2x8’s hooked up the lows feel really big and solid. I’d considered doing a 4x8 design in a different form factor because I love the sound of these speakers, but they’re expensive speakers, so I kinda doubt I’d do it considering what I’d have to charge for the cab
Interesting. I bet a 4ohm 2x8 and a 4ohm 2x12 built into the same ported cabinet would sound interesting. Would think with the right crossovers you'd get deep rich mids and tight thundering lows in a manageable sized cab. But I know nothing of bass cabinet design, I'll leave that to the experts.

I didn’t! I just put up a photo of a rig I was playing with that happened to be in my music room. I cleaned it recently, so what’s wrong with it now?!

@kat888 - did you notice Duke has a pedal that matches his Cataldo. You need to follow suit and have one of your pedals painted red to match your CatBird as well.
