Thunderbird Club

New string day! Put on a set of EB Cobalt Flats on my 5 string Epi Bird. Decided to try them based on the recommendation of another Club member who shall remain nameless(Jeff). WOW! recorded the sound of the previous strings and the Cobalts playing the same riffs. The Cobalts make it SOUND like a 'Bird even though it has P/J pups. (I only use the P- and, yes, I did try it w/ both). I have to Cut highs to get the sounds I prefer but these things are un-frickin'-real!. Got 'em from the TB store and a shout out to Paul who worked with me when I ordered the wrong set initially. The only "bad" thing is that now I think I'm gonna keep it:D:hyper::bassist:
I initially put those on my EB3 but I am getting way more out of them on my Washburn acoustic. They are amazing.

I started playing bass in the Navy(Navy musician-tough job-not)using an EB-3[neck pup]into a......7ender Super reverb(4 10s). We were at low volume, basically background music, but it held up well.
Now that experiment I can run with. I have a couple of EB's (actually two SG's and an EB14) and a Fender SuperReverb. I'll give it a spin, but I fully expect the speakers to sound like puppy doodoo.

:eek:I cant believe you came "that close" to experiencing the sound.........but didnt.
Story of my life! I've come "that close" to experiencing a lot of things, the fact that I didn't go quite far enough explains why I'm still alive today with more than half of my brain cells still functioning, that's more than a lot of my high school buddies can claim.

Not at a low volume though, you'll be surprised, but trying to reach any volume to what we bassists are accustomed to, That's where it won't hold up. Not being speakers designed for bass, but that's pretty obvious.

They damn sher sound good on my Gretsch!:thumbsup:

I got a set for my 'bird a while ago, but I'mma wait until I get some decent tuning machines on it before I string 'em up.

Funny story... my best friend has been playin' guitar for 40 years. His brother's been playin' bass for longer than that. He grew up around bands & music. He knows gear! He sat down & noodled on the BlueBastard for the first time a few days ago. He didn't wanna put it down! He just paused every few minutes to say, "This is GREAT! I could do this all night!". Like me... he'd always thought the bolt-on Epis were sh!t! He kept sayin', "There's nothing wrong with this... this is GREAT!". I mentioned that I had, at one point, entertained the idea of swappin' pups, and before I had the opportunity to let him know that it was a passing fancy, and that I loved it the way it was... he chewed me out! "Don't fvck with it man! It's perfect the way it is! Don't be an idiot!". It even took me a couple minutes to talk him into "letting me" put new tuning machines on it! When I finally get around to it... I guess I'mma hafta put the SuperTone on it, on the downlow!:cautious: :D

remember, the key is "at low volume". be curious to hear your thoughts on that setup..
Well just warmed up the trusty old SuperReverb blackface and plugged my Surf Strat into channel two. Played a few licks at bedroom volume and a few at low stage volume (all tone pots centered and vibrato and reverb off). Sounded great.
Went back to bedroom volume, plugged in an SG bass, centered the onboard tone pot and did a walking bass line.

Conclusion - don't go there! Absolute fart out on every string at every note until you get up around a high G and even then the speakers are struggling to stay attached to the sound board. No way would I ever use this set up for any bass at any volume. Much worse than puppy doodoo!

Can you disconnect the onboard speakers & connect a bass cab to the amp?

Yes, I could do that and I'm sure it would sound ok. But I won't bother. I really don't see any value in driving a high power cab like the Bergantino HT322 or NV610 with a 65 watt guitar head when I have a 150 watt Musicman head, a 300 watt Ampeg SVT and a 450watt Thunderfunk amp I can use. Heck, even my 30 pound GK 210 combo has more than four times the power of the SuperReverb.

The better question is - what will my guitars sound like playing through my bass rigs? I'd bet money that my guitars sound better thru the bass rigs than my basses sound thru my guitar rigs.
Which just underscores another point - bass playing rules!

The SVT was used as a guitar amp back in the day. So i'd say.....................

I'm baffled by how flats of any kind would tear up your fingers. You are unique.

My preferences are getting narrowed down to Black Beauties (and other colors of the same strings) or Cobalt Flats. I expect that's going to be the extent of my string choices after a few more experiments. Beyond that, I'll just see what Mark o' Rock does and has to say about different strings.
I put a set of Labella 1954s on a P bass and played a wedding gig. The sound was awesome, but I have never before or after had the much blistering on my plucking fingerso_O

Which is strange. The original bassman had those same speakers and 50 watts. Granted it sounded better with guitar but it was Fender's first poke at a bass amp. Ironically it was copied onto the JTM 45 Marshall down to the 5881 tubes but that's another topic..

Time for some kind of humbucker in that neck position......Them Chinabuckers seem pretty cheap. Also, someone around here is getting rid of a pair of Gibsons, maybe buy one of them? Wants 100 for the pair..
