Thunderbird Club

...The neat thing about the TBird is IMHO it's every bit as much a chameleon as a P bass, just bigger and badder. Sound and looks wise it'll fit just about anywhere. Will you have to deal with a raised eyebrow from a soundman or a guitarist that you haven't worked with before? Maybe, and if you have the chops you can put that to rest in pretty short order. Likewise, it can be equally fun to torque their little minds by bringing something that looks familiar to them but sounds familiar to you. So much fun, so little time. :D

I read a review from several years ago in a fairly major gear magazine. The guy considered Thunderbirds one trick ponies. I was gobsmacked. Everyone is allowed their opinion, but I was appalled that made it into print.

Cool pic. What years were you in the Navy? I’m looking up the gulf of Tonkin now trying to determine.

I watched the Ken Burns Vietnam documentary and I am in the middle of the Oliver Stone Untold History of the United States. Very focused perspective. A lot of answers that I’d never gotten before.
November 64-Nov.68. Tonkin Gulf is off the east coast of Vietnam.

I laugh every time I hear that about a number of different basses. Ive seen it said of TBirds, Stingrays, Rics and even P basses. Truth is, for the most part those ponys have just about as many tricks in them as you have in your playing style and EQ options.

For the record - I just spent the last couple of hours in my bass room playing my Eppi VP Bird along with random Pandora website tunes. The playlist included classic rock, southern rock, disco, Latin tango, French cafe, country, bluegrass, classical, swing and big band. Sounds like more than one trick to me.

LOL - Truth be told I have about 50 basses to choose from, not a bad sounding one in the bunch, and in all honesty 90% of them could be used to cover 95% of the stuff I play. So when you have that many good choices to meet the sound needs it gives you the freedom to select a specific one that additionally compliments the setting, the genre, the theme, the weather or even whatever clothes I happen to be wearing that day.

One advantage of the NR(which I'd never thought about 'til I read comments on TB)is that it looks sort of "normal" and the average Joe doesn't recognize it as being "different". I've never had anyone complain that I should play 'something else'. If they did, I could always bring in my 5 string NR epiBird.:smug:<Edit> It has a P pup, that should make 'em happy.

1123 feet long 257 feet wide, up to 90 aircraft....usually 60. First nuclear powered vessel....unlimited range...or 20 to 25 years....lol. Cuban missle crisis and Vietnam among others... I’m Guessing this is the ship in the film for the evacuation of South Vietnam..

Longest serving air craft carrier at over 50 years. Really cool.

Or did you mean this USS Enterprise? The specs on this .v. are even more impressive. Lol

Yeah. The big 'boat' with planes on the roof was it. Really not a lot of interesting stories aboard ship(other than the Ann-Margret visit). I was a musician(sax/clarinet)in the Navy which beat hell out of chipping paint but I had very little to do with the operations, particularly air, of the ship. Bands in the Navy are assigned to 'Commands' which rotate ships. We were attached to "Commander Carrier Division One" for 6 months onboard Enterprise, then known as CVA(N)-65. "N" because there were still operational conventionally powered carriers in the fleet.

Still very cool.
