Thunderbird Club

Both beautiful basses.
So tell me more about the Eppi P/J. How does it sound vs your Gibby NR?
When I first got it, it had rounds. I got a set of 7ender flats-:meh:. I replaced those with EB Cobalt flats. There's the sound I want(thanks again @JJR58). I don't use the bridge pup on any bass but that J pup is particularly useless. I only play the EpiBird at the house 'cos it's 10+ lbs-too much for these old shoulders for a whole gig. Because I also put the Cobalt flats on the Gibby, they are similar with the Epi having maybe a bit more punch. Then again, when I max the tone on the Gibby, they're pretty equal.

I put a fresh set on my ‘71 not long ago. They work really well on that bass.

That's what Thunderbirds do. If you have a Thunderbird, you don't need to enhance your animal magnetism. In fact, if would be bad if you do because it would throw off all kinds of things that shouldn't be thrown off.

Great collection!!! That chromed out trans cherry Bird looks killer!!!

Given the two input limitations, sub mixing the drums before the interface is a great suggestion, I think. Enables a potentially bigger kick and snare sound. I’ve done a couple records using only two mics on the drums though and it worked just fine. You just have to accept the limitations. I have no doubt Kat’s stereo LDC thing will ‘work’ just fine. When I’ve done it, I use either an AKG D12e or and RE20 in front of the kick and my AEA R84 up top and move it around until I’m happy enough with the sound. I lose the stereo image, but stereo drums just aren’t super important to me on some records. I just send the mono overhead to a stereo bus (add subtle reverb/ambience) to spread the image a bit.

Mid-Side (MS) Mic Recording Basics | Universal Audio

My initial inclination was to be as minimalist as possible but I actually agree that 4 mics is undoubtedly better. One thing I haven't done yet is discuss this with my fulltime pro audio engineer guitar player, as I've been too busy enabling her pedal addiction. She may have access to all kinds of gear.

This guitarist sounds like the greatest thing since sliced bread. She's a guitarist who isn't overwhelming, isn't too loud, uses pedals to good effect and not just effect, is a sound engineer, and everything else. Dayum! You came out ahead after the mild guitarist drama wilderness you went through to find her.

And now it's possible that she's got the gear you need to do the recordings you want to do. She just keeps getting better all the time. She sounds like she takes the place of those 12 steps Mark needed to rationalize a purchase, all by herself.
