Per @PillO's smartarse suggestion, that's what drum machines are for. The singer programmed drums under one of my basslines and it's seriously good. Onwards and upwards.

Well, just don't tell them, but it's an interesting approach. At the risk of taking smartarsery too far... As you audition new drummers, compare them to the drum machine. And tell them they are auditioning against a drum machine. The ones that you reject, you can tell them that the machine has better feel for the songs.
Yeah, that was too far.
Ok, strings. I need a set of half rounds or flats that aren't high tension or thuddy, for 5 string bass with a lot of upper mid in its voice. I want to try and even that tendency out some, so I can use it for reggae... that predominant upper mid needs to sit back enough so I can get into the D string without my bass' presence leaving that lower, dubby-tone emphasis.
Some of you guys are string mavens, any thoughts? Should I just go for tapes? I kind of need something that will still give up some highs when needed, that bass does service in the 80s band too.
Edit... there are so many choices: hex core, round core, all the variations of windings... flat, half round, yadda-yadda. Steel or nickel. Tapes... which I had on a 7ender once and actually got some highs out of. But it's too much and why I tend to stick with a few. But this bass has me second- guessing myself with that upper mid thing, seems to be baked in and eq-ing it out ain't quite happening... probably the after market preamp that someone installed. Anyway..
Thanks for your time here.
I'll do that, thanks.Fat Beams or other compression wound strings?
I would also suggest getting hold of @SLaPiNFuNK
[edit] he hangs out in the strings area and is the owner/operator of fretnation (formerly BassStringsOnline)
Good luck. 'My' band has been on hiatus b/c our singer got a hip replacement. Singer chimed in Friday saying he was ready to start practicing again. Crickets from two members, including the drummer. Wouldn't be a bad thing, methinks. But I do dread having to do what you're doing.Per @PillO's smartarse suggestion, that's what drum machines are for. At least its happening before you got regular, reoccurring gigs on the books, right?
Playing in a band would be so perfect if it weren't for the people.
That would seem incredibly shortsighted on their part if it's because of the quality of the recordings.Yeah, we're nowhere near gigging atm. I believe a couple of drummers have already said no, on the basis of poor quality recording, poor quality drumming or they hate the songs. Need better demos -- and those will happen over the next couple of weeks.
More subjects for your camera's eye. That is good. You, my friend, know.
Maybe. Maybe not.Yeah, that was too far.
Basis of what? You have to be kidding! Hate the songs- well ok. The other two reasons are just silly.Yeah, we're nowhere near gigging atm. As a fool, I am happy with strength in numbers. Without slower fools, we all would have been lion food.Better it is to live alone; there is no fellowship with a fool. Buddha
I've used tapes(D'Adarrio)on the 67 NR in the past. OK but didn't last long enough. I have tapes on the Ibby semi-hollow-work as a sorta UB tone. I had stuck with D'Addario strings exclusively for years-Chromes on the NR, 1/2 rounds on the LPB2(5), etc. 'til Jeff steered me to the EB Cobalt flats-prolly not what you want for that bass. I have them on the 5 string EpiBird and they give me what I want on it but I kinda doubt they would do for your purposes.Ok, strings.
