Thunderbird Club

Now that I no longer have a drummer to pick me and my 19kg bass head/bass in case/pedalboard up, am going to have to travel lighter. A TC BQ500 is calling to me and it's good to have a spare. Who doesn't want an amplifier with a thrust control?

Technically I don't consider myself a luddite as I'm not against progress, I just choose to not be part of certain aspects of it as a socio-political statement. To begin with I don't want to be connected 24-7, I'm not a doctor or a drug-dealer. When driving and as a cyclist/motorcyclist, I'm constantly irritated by drivers texting and not giving a s_it doing so. It's part of the general disregard people have for their 'fellow man' - "yah, I'm texting while driving and if you don't like it, F-you" When walking in a crowd of people, I'm one of the few who isn't staring into their iPhone. Our 30-something keyboardist/singer who I am so happy to have in our band might as well have her iPhone superglued to her hand. At rehearsal, any brief moment between songs - the phone is being checked. And don't get me started on "tech culture" as I am surrounded by it in the Bay Area. Too many aspects I could vent about. To avoid that and refer to your last 'note' - I agree with you about missing snail-mail. I love writing and used to send postcards and letters all the time. I'd turn the white envelop into a complex multi-colour picture, where the address would be part of the cartoon. I bet mail-delivery people really enjoyed them.

I plug in where I need to - and leave the vacuous world of tech to those with their iPhone grafted to their hand.

Amen! We must share genetic material at some level! We just don't understand that that phone must be checked so often, just in case [insert most important person on the planet here] just might be calling because we aren't A-listers.

Ahem!

That may be the first time I have ahemed the Kat.

I am curious if any of you have experimented with TI flats on a Thunderbird.

I had some on my '76 for several years. Only changed because I had other strings around...and that's what we all do when that happens. I really liked them on that bass and may put them back on at some point. I'm working through string options now on my '64 Epi Embassy (i.e. Bat-Bird). Might know after practice tonight. I thought the TIs made for some solid thump and good mids. Of course the pups in that are different, but not far off from the 60s sound.

I love TI flats on my Hofner, but never tried em on a 34” scale bass. The (many) reports of em being floppy kinda scared me off and I don’t play with a light touch...would like to try em on a 34” scale bass at some point though
I don't find them as noodle monsters are are commonly told in the stories around here. Only slight adjustment is needed in playing. Unless one plays like they're chopping wood or something. Give them a try sometime or find someone who has them on a bass it give them a go.

The Elf is much smaller and lighter, but costs about the same as the BQ500. Is 130/200 continuous class D watts enough to carry a small pub stage (if push comes to shove)? We can be reasonably sure the TC 500W rating will be downhill with a strong tailwind.

200 watt rating:

The cabinet and speaker might have a little to do with the adequacy of 200 watts. They may also be CroMagnon watts.

I am oncall 24/7 two weeks on ... two weeks off. For a fortnight I'm a slave to my phone, then I ignore it completely. Outside of work, I use a traditional computer for recording music and I still maintain a website for a friend. That is it. I want no more complicated interaction with technology than what I can do on my iPad with Safari and a text editor.
+1

I bought the 250 version for our keyboards - no complaints!

I did, then didn't care for Cobalts. Never tried them on a Bird.... Now you cats are making me rethink things a bit now that I'm string searching for my new VP and '64 Embassy. You guys are just no good.:D

D'Addario NYXL's

Your Traynor YBA 200 is 10W/Kg. If you were to swap for a YBA 300, you would be increasing your power density to 13W/Kg. For a small increase of 3Kg, you get 100W more!

If you upgrade to a Mesa Eight:88, you go up to a power density of 20.9W/Kg - so light you could carry it under your arm!
