Your Traynor YBA 200 is 10W/Kg. If you were to swap for a YBA 300, you would be increasing your power density to 13W/Kg. For a small increase of 3Kg, you get 100W more!

If you upgrade to a Mesa Eight:88, you go up to a power density of 20.9W/Kg - so light you could carry it under your arm!
Nice thing about the Strategy Eight:88 is you can choose 125, 250, or 465W with the flip of a switch!

I saw/heard an organ/drum/bass trio at my high school auditorium and the bass player had one of these, most likely brand new. (late 60's) I didn't know anything about anything but wanted an amp just like that! No way I could afford one then and no reason on earth to own one now - but I still think they are super cool amps.

The Elf is much smaller and lighter, but costs about the same as the BQ500. Is 130/200 continuous class D watts enough to carry a small pub stage (if push comes to shove)? We can be reasonably sure the TC 500W rating will be downhill with a strong tailwind.

I'd go for the extra power, just to have it on tap. Says he who has a 600watt amp in a studio apt.

OK by me.

Thank you very much! I sure appreciate it! and I actually got it from Japan with the help of Nocturnal finding the ad for me. I was pestering him with my questions and he's always been extremely nice and helpful. It was here very promptly and picked it up for a decent price as well. I was worried about the shipping but it came ready to play out of the box! I was surprised for sure.

Glad it all worked out for you!! I am always happy to help people spend money on basses. Especially something Bird related

Now that I no longer have a drummer to pick me and my 19kg bass head/bass in case/pedalboard up, am going to have to travel lighter. A TC BQ500 is calling to me and it's good to have a spare. Who doesn't want an amplifier with a thrust control?

I don't know, looks like all hat and no cattle to me.

:D

I got an Elf last summer. With my 4 ohm 210 it's a pretty nice surprise with a "small band' in a smallish-to-mid sized room. If you have pa you're all set.
A pair of efficent 2x 8 ohm cabs with the Elf will be pretty impressive- give it some speakers to drive. And it'll overdrive some with the gain cranked, which dynamically affects the eq.
So, I'd say yes.

Edited.............

And edit...
The tone is hefty in the low mids, plenty of snap up high. Big bottom. Blame thing is not a practice amp, it's fairly farkin' loud. 200 impressive watts. Try one through a cab you like.

Cabs would be a bit hit and miss -- if we stay at 3x3 it's the Trace 215 or the Hartke 410, but realistically it could be any random cab anywhere.

I don't want to spend more than $450, it has to fit into the gig bag or a small backpack.

i have to be that ignorant east coaster yank, and have to ask. Which meaning of 3x3?

And i still dare you all to find a sock. Sock minkey, yes, but actual sock..

My MB200 barely breaks a sweat for pub gigs with my (7 piece) cover band. I use 2 x 210 AVs.
