Thunderbird Club

Cabs would be a bit hit and miss -- if we stay at 3x3 it's the Trace 215 or the Hartke 410, but realistically it could be any random cab anywhere.

I don't want to spend more than $450, it has to fit into the gig bag or a small backpack.

And now a more serious suggestion...

Have you considered one of these?
Vox - MV50 AC Miniature 50W Amplifier
Vox - MV50 Clean Miniature 50W Amplifier

50W at 4 ohms. The classic rock is too much drive (and the high gain is just insane drive for bass). But the AC has nice drive for bass. Or just get the clean one. And so small you could lose it in your handbag. I auditioned these through a 1x15 (Traynor) and they were plenty loud. Through a bigger cab you would get some serious volume. I still think about getting the AC one.

If, you can.

I got an Elf last summer. With my 4 ohm 210 it's a pretty nice surprise with a "small band' in a smallish-to-mid sized room. If you have pa you're all set.
A pair of efficent 2x 8 ohm cabs with the Elf will be pretty impressive- give it some speakers to drive. And it'll overdrive some with the gain cranked, which dynamically affects the eq.
So, I'd say yes.

Edited.............

And edit...
The tone is hefty in the low mids, plenty of snap up high. Big bottom. Blame thing is not a practice amp, it's fairly farkin' loud. 200 impressive watts. Try one through a cab you like.

I posed the question out in gen pop ... one reply so far, saying the Elf is "Louder, better tone, more robust, no comparison".

I guess that eliminates an Acoustic 360. And here we were going to chip in and pop one into a envelope and mail it to you.

I talked(yeah, on the phone)to a guy at Vox about the MV50 Clean for what I want tone-wise. It would probably work well but no place near me had any to try. GC woulda ordered me one-pay, play, return if I didn't like it. Didn't feel like tying up the $.

That looks like a great rehearsal space. I am less convinced by the decor.

Yeah, since I mentioned the colours, it has been known as Ikea Stadium.

It has a 12 channel Mackie mixer with a range of FX and a JBL EON 615 PA for vocals (and drum machine until we find a new drummer).

D'Addario NYXL's
Thanks. I've never tired them. I'm not a fan of DA strings. Non-distinct sounding to me--at least the XLs, but in in the dark about the NYXLs.

I tried the GHS Pressurewounds on the old Embassy tonight and it sounded really good, but not "wow!" good. I need something with more bite in the mids and a little more crispness in the highs (but not glassy or brittle). I'm going to have to consider those DAs. Thanks for the suggestion.

How would you describe them?
