Thunderbird Club

I'm a gin drinker also. Hendricks is great straight up, but my favorite tall cold G&T on a hot summer day is Beefeater with Schweppes tonic water and a twist of lime on the rocks. Never liked Bombay for some reason. I'll pass on a G&T if Bombay is the only choice, but will settle for Tanqueray if I have to.

Tanq is OK, but I prefer Bombay. Beefeater is decent rail gin. But, Hendricks is just head and shoulders above all else.

I had a strange experience with G&T in Germany. Having one in the hotel bar, it didn't taste right. I inspected the gin bottle and it was fine. The tonic however, contained "artificial quinine flavour" and that was the problem. The bartender hunted up real tonic and everything was good in the world.

A lot of people don't realize that the tonic water has as much impact on a good G&T as the Gin does. To my tastebuds, Hendricks just ruins a good Gin and Tonic. It's flavored and doesn't play well in a mix, but straight up on the rocks it's delicious. YMMV

Just curious- do any of you feel you have to have pedals? My compressor and EQ are on most of the time, but the only thing I *have* to have is the bass.

A couple of our songs rely on the RAT sound for their mood. I may have to pick up an MXR M85 as a backup to the CatTail at some point. One of the RAT songs wouild be a lot less trippy on the chorus if I didn't have the flanger (RAT > whooshy flanger is rad).

The other three are utility -- the tuner is essential, could live without the HPF and preamp if need be.

Had a pleasant Sunday watching the now 41 and 19 Dodgers complete a sweep of the Phillies. Got the ‘15 more or less dialed in after the Cobalt Flats installation. I’m liking them so far. Decided on neck relief at .012. E and A strings a tad under 5/64 at the 17th and the D and G a tad over 4/64. Intonation is pretty much dialed in. I’ll check everything again in a week or two and may still play with bridge PU height.

Hendricks requires cucumber rather than lime. Lime ruins Hendricks. If I am ordering a Hendricks, first question is "do you have cucumber?". If I get a puzzled look, it isn't a gin place.

Not sure how this furthers the gin conversation...

But I like a good jet engine flange on my bass for a psychedelic feel. And although it is supposed to be a chorus, to my ears, Stranglehold sounds better with flange on bass.

We've had a real, long spring. Unusual for Austin. I only got around to shaving my bears off a week ago; usually it's gone well before now. But it's only recently gotten into the high 80s for more than a day, much less the couple of 90-91F days we had recently.

We had a beautiful, long spring this year as well. Several days in the mid-70s for a high each week in May. I think we are at the 95 -100 degree mark moving forward for the next several months tho. I enjoyed it while it was here.

Like others here, I had a busy day yesterday.

Part one
My daughter had her first piano recital. I was very proud of her, I didn't hear any errors and told her "see, the hard work and practice payed off". She told me that she did make one mistake but just continued as if it had never happened just as I had told her to. She played Piano Man, but she didn't like my version of it (which I offered to sing)*

*To the tune of Billie Jean
Billy Joel is not my teacher,
He's just a guy who plays the pi-ano, man!

Part two
In the afternoon, we went to Cosmofest Link Removed

We arrived later in the day; in time to see/hear Chilliwack but didn't spend a lot of time on the septagenarians - instead going through the exhibit hall to swipe our badges to try to win some music gear.

Finger Eleven (formerly the Rainbow Butt Monkeys) played. That was a great set; they rock. Part way through one of their hits, Paralyzer, they break into Back in Black but continue to sing Paralyzer. A great take on their own song.

For those that care, the band is local to me - they grew up in the some neighbourhood in which I live; there is a good chance my daughter will go to the high school from which they graduated.

The last act was Sloan. They did a good show. Because Nicko McBrain (of Iron Maiden) was doing a clinic, there were a lot of Iron Maiden t-shirts in the crowd. The singer made a funny joke about it being the most Iron Maiden fans they have ever had at one of their shows, but it started to wear thin the third time he said "Wrathchild" between songs. It would have been funny had they played a few bars of an Iron Maiden song in their own style.

I saw Sloan back in October (I think) and my complaint at that time was that they didn't play Money City Maniacs (their biggest hit). They haven't played it live for several years. I guess they must have heard the complaints from fans; tey played it last night.

** not my video and several years old

The kiddo was wiped out from a long eventful day, so we left with three or four songs left in Sloan's set. On the way out, we run into Rick from Finger Eleven and he stopped to talk with us. Got another picture of my daughter with a rock star.

Geddy Lee did a book signing at CosmoFest, but my brother and I elected to go get our books and have them signed at a different event earlier in the week. It would just be too big a PIA to carry around a heavy book for the day and they wanted you to line up 2 hours in advance for the signing. Well, it turns out that Geddy used that 2 hour line up to his advantage. He wandered around CosmoFest with Dave Grohl for a little bit before the signing.

That isn't Luke Skywalker, that is the lead guitar player.

Thanks. I have the Finger Eleven CD that Paralyser is on. Really liked it. Haven’t played it for a while, I’ll have to dig it out again.
Next time you see him you can say there are (at least) 2 fans in Oz. My wife heard Paralyser in the car one day and rang the radio station when she got home.
We had the CD that weekend.

We have three bass players at church, and someone else (an excellent player with serious band experience) was playing this morning. He said his bass went quiet half way through the first set (we came for second service), so he dug out his mini-keyboard and played that. I [pointed out that the third bass player leaves a bass at church (forgetting that we also have a Yamaha bass of unknown ownership there as well). He said he didn't know if it was the bass or his pedalboard, so that wouldn't work. Alas, I didn't get a chance to discuss it further.

While I like my board, I have no problem plugging straight in. When my board developed a problem mid-set a while back, I did exactly that. I practice without any effects most of the time, and occasionally play that way just because.

Just curious- do any of you feel you have to have pedals? My compressor and EQ are on most of the time, but the only thing I *have* to have is the bass.
No pedals are mandatory. I sure like being wireless and the Broughton is a big plus, but I could live without them if there was a problem. So far it has let me down once in a rehearsal and it was a problem cable.

I started playing only 3 years ago (my brother says it was a mid-life thing). It was a combination of things, but I like to learn new things and at that point I decided that since all my education is in hard sciences, I really should learn music. And I kind of wish that when I was younger, someone had given me a little push to learn (lots of factors there too). So, not wanting to repeat "mistakes" through generations, I have given my daughter the gentlest of nudges - but once every couple of months we discuss if she wants to continue.
Same, pretty much. On the mid life crisis thing - I reminded my wife that there are probably other options that she’d like less... next thing she is supporting me when the kids had a crack about me buying the Gibson...

There are five boxes on the board. Aside from the wireless receiver/tuner and Broughton, there is a DI box that also does ground lift if necessary, a high and low octaver and an envelope follower. The last two are for a specific sound with the upright. It stands in for bass and keys at times with those set right.

There's a drink called Negroni, make it with Bombay......Heavenly, Mr. Liver approves!

I stick to good scotch, neat, or good rum, also neat. Both have a certain self limiting quality that I find useful for self preservation. Beer also has a good governor - the belly usually fills up before too many bad outcomes.

Hey wrestling was real! It became fake when Hulk Hogan didn't want to lose the championship!

Hate to burst your bubble - but the wrestling before Hulk Hogan was real... staged. I mean, like I said - they were wrestlers and they framed the show around the concept of wrestling... but it was showbiz - entertainment, and it has been for a long time.
