Don't do it! Never mess with perfection. Instead just buy a used Eppi VP with Mahogany finish and send it out to be stripped and painted a vintage sea foam green, would go beautifully with pinky!

Actually, I've kicked around the idea of having a VP stained in 1970's era Fender Three Tone Sunburst and adding a Tort guard just to taunt the Fender boyz. A dramatic burst like this or even brighter...

If I could have gotten a THUNDERBIRD in that finish, it definitely would have been my first bass!

Indeed. For reasons beyond the extra age. They do not sound exactly the same. No doubt due to the different PSs. I wouldn't take anything for my '64 T-Bird or '64 Embassy. While I like the '76, I could sell it. Now that I have the VP with the right strings, I'm not sure I don't like it as well is not a little more. Maybe.

I do wonder how the Orville (1990 Gibson parts MIJ) with a Thunderbucker 66 pup compares to an actual Gibson from the 60s or 70s. It's the lightest of my basses and has a certain 'built for racing' quality about it.

Mine's not like a '76, either in construction or pickups. '70s pups are their own animal, as I recall there are at least two variations, and, with Gibson's usual spotty QC, my two are a bit different sounding. I also think they need a big amp and some volume to really "get" the tone. Construction is different as well, '76s are 9 ply, Orville is set neck, when I play my Gibson it's like I'm really playing a "big" bass, the way it hangs, plays, it's just cool - and yes, a little bit historic ( not '60s historic mind you!) My Orville isn't stock but the quality is readily apparent, in some QC aspects it's better than a Gibson, the pickups are "okay" not great, they lack the growl and top end, and no clank. I traded mine out for some China Buckers and like them better, but am still trying different strings out on it. Since it's set neck, I'd think an Orville with a vintage pickup would be closest to Non Reverse in terms of sound.

I like green things...

Sorry, but I can't help there. I suspect Scott @godofthunder59 can likely shed the most light on your question.
