Thunderbird Club

There is nothing I can add without risking banning. Other righteously angry music with which I identify contains profanities. Personal opinion on the matters that lead to righteous anger certainly strays into politics. And strangely, I tend to like my music politics free because I disagree with the politics of just about all recording artists (on all sides of the political spectrum).

I'm a study in contradictions.
YOU!?!?

It's a morning of much packing and getting ready for me, we're off on a three day trip to play 7 Cedars Casino outside of Sequim, WA. It's the big rock show for Halloween so we go all out, I have three outfit changes and four basses along for the ride. T he Les Paul Gold Top gets the nod for the first set, with the Epi VP being used on the last two songs as they're detuned a half step. The Jackson gets the second set and the Lull owns the third.
I write the set list and this show we're really watching the clock, we start at 8:30 and need to have two sets and a break in before 11:00 at which point the Casino does it's costume contest, that gives us about an hour to cool off and regroup. The last set can go as long as it needs to and anything that gets cut for time could be played there if we feel like it. As you can see, it's mostly '80s stuff with a few others in there, in writing the set list my goal is to just keep the evening steadily ramping up, so we don't mess around between songs much, just plow ahead, it keeps folks asses on the dance floor.
I will try to post some stuff as time allows - be good!

Hello? Yes, I'd like to report a young Thunderbird that's been thrown out of the house and abandoned by it's dad. Yes. mmhmm... Yup. It's just sitting out in front of the house now trying to get back in the locked door. It's heartbreaking to see.
Actually, I do know someone that would love to strip its parts... I mean... take loving care of it. Yes, that's right. His name is name is @GBassNorth.

No, I don't think he had anything to do with this. What's that? You have traced several text messages from southern California to this instrument's phone? I didn't even know that a bass could use a phone with the whole lack of opposable thumbs thing. Kids today sure do seem to find a way don't they?

No, I've never heard of people radicalizing bases over the internet...
Do, you think that this could be one of those cases? I mean, I don't really know the guy, except from a website called Talkbass.com.
oh....
wow....
oh my...
Well..... uh... I guess you don't really ever know someone do you? Those Californians are a strange lot, aren't they?

Well thanks, officer. I hope you catch the guy. I'm sure that the moderator of the Thunderbird Club on Talkbass will help you out. Yeah, the one with the polka dotted dress.

OK, have a nice day and stay safe!

:wacky:
:thumbsup:LOL - if the shoe fits... (but it'll have to fit the right foot for now).;)

More than inconveniencing. Costing money, and possibly health and lives. Criminal reaction to getting caught out for criminal negligence.
Bad decision all the way around.

One of my kids got me to try sushi. I said don't tell me what anything is till after. Turns out the eel was my fave.
Roast eel, my favorite!

I would take issue with the idea that they have been managing well enough given the previous few decades with rotating blackouts, fires, and the current planned blackouts. I might be inclined to agree that they were doing well enough up until some time in the 80s... But I don't have any data to support adequate management up to the 80s.
A decade ago brown outs used to be a thing here, but it turned out to be largely political, as are the preemptive power outages. There's an easy fix but zero competence or will to do the right thing.

It would interesting to see the state of the aquifers for those two years. From what I’ve read, the population is sucking the groundwater out much faster than it replenishes to the point where the land is sinking.
Don't know about sinking land, but CA water management is even worse than its power management, almost completely a political problem with very easy solutions that every other state employs, but not here, just mind boggling.

really? look again...70000 vs. 10000000? hmmm i realize the scaling is not the same but...add to that extremely dry weather and high winds...
LA should not be there....it's growth was not sustainable from day 1..
The Paradise fire, the Thomas fire and nearly all the other deadly fires driving the latest decision to preemptively shut off power in CA don't have anything to do with the overpuplated areas you're referencing. But I do agree, the LA metro area is grossly overpopulated and has almost completely overwhelmed the infrastructure that supports it (again with the help of very poor stewardship from our public leadership who have different priorities).

This times a thousand!

And now it's time for a Friday Night Bird in Flight...

All strung up with Black Beauty heavy Tapers (50-110) and sounding quite nice. I took the old strings off, oiled the fretboard, put 3/4 of a right turn on the truss rod to create a hearty backbow, installed the BB tapers, stretched them a bit, tuned to pitch, had to make a large intonation adjustment to the E string, was able to drop the saddle heights on each string, now has an open E at the 12th of about 4/64" (1/16" for us USA OCD types). Plays very nice, the strings are large but still supple, very true to normal BB sound but maybe a bit bolder on the lower register, relatively well balanced across the set. I'll need to let them settle in for a few days to see if the action needs any further tweaking, but so far I'm really liking them. $25 well spent.

A little earlier I finally managed to visit a guitar shop which has always been closed when I pass it.

There wasn't a great selection of basses, certainly no Thunderbirds, although I did have a twiddle on an Epi EB3L and a Gibson LP with Barts. Made me realise how nice my Thunderbirds are and how nicely set up they are. Both shop basses would have benefited from pulleys to assist with fretting.

Oh, and they sell only one brand of bass strings (as is usual here).

Nice ‘Bird! Nice strap!

It seems like a lot of stores don't do a lot with set ups.
I own an old Epi EB3L, cost £65 with dings and chips, but the action was just to my liking.
Filled all the chips with nail varnish.View attachment 3575662 View attachment 3575663 View attachment 3575664
The one today was a new EB3L for the best part of £600.
I picked up my EB3L for C$300 used from my local L&M. Someone had bought it several years prior and sold it back. From the looks of it, they bought it, took it home, and stuck it in a closet. It still had the factory strings on it and the stickers on the back of the headstock.

Now it is tuned BEAD.

Good Deal,
Nothing like finding a "Case Queen" eh?
I always thought those were very cool, wouldn't it be a "Hoot" to put 2 "Mudbuckers" on a "Boyd" LOL Gotta try that sometime, maybe do the DiMarzio ones that "Billy" uses...

Yeah, in my mind, humbucker>split P>singlecoil J. And I love the sidewinders on my EB3 and Midtown. Those p/us really bring some thunder.

Man do I love that strap! I prefer wider leather straps, but that would look good with my white VP! Maybe it would be a tad gaudy with the stunning white, but I can do gaudy once in a while!
