yes, but a power supply will only give so much....more related to the lack of an OT imo....Gm is Gm regardless of the construction of the active devices...

Right. The PSU has to be capable of the extra power. But many tube amps have that; the better mfrs just rate power at low (very low for stereo/hi-fi) THD. Then there were the sleazeballs who came up with alternative terms just so they could make outrageous claims...
 
So the poly finish on the VP is REALLY TOUGH.
How do I know?
Practicing some jazz last night sitting on a stool, I got up to futz with a chart and the strap at the heel came off. (I know -straplocks! I had a rubber washer on there, but it’s an old leather strap with a worn hole)
My left arm was above the neck, so I had no chance to catch it. The headstock hit the maple floor hard with its lower edge. The bass was plugged into an amp. It made a very loud, deep bang!

My wife calls up “you ok?” I reply with “I’m fine, but the Thunderbird hit the floor”
My daughter, bless her heart, came running up “ I heard a Big Bang and then you said Thunderbird...”

No cracks, not a scratch on the poly. I saw it hit, but can’t find any evidence. Nitro would have had a scar for sure.

Your wife loves you. Your daughter understands this side of you and has similar values. Awesome family.

That's good to know. Sorry you had to find out that way. An instrument falling is always a heartstopper. Even if it's a cheap one it's just a gut reaction to hold your breath. Pete Townsend being the obvious exception. Sounds like you have a wonderful family. But it seems your wife might need to get up to speed with her priorities like your wise-for-her-years daughter! But of course, it was "just" an Epiphone, so your wife has some standing.

absolutely, the Peak vs RMS wars of the 70's were a load of hogwash that misled for years....then there's the issue of sagging supplies that clipped the signal prematurely and added harmonic content that made things sound fuller but not necessarily louder since B+ was now lower (some now add a series R to emulate this especially with ss rects)....at the end of the day, for any perception of "louder" the power would have to at least double and we know that's not the case for if it was, fuses (even slo-blo types) would be blowing more often....all very subjective...

Not to pick on Ampeg, but do you think a side by side comparison of a PF350 and an SVTCL into identical cabs would offer comparable RMS measurements and frequency response +/- 3dB?

This one is wearing Cobalt Flats. And I love it!

well .... I still didnt find a string set that I dislike on the Vintage Pro, so....



The RS66s were great, and I love Cobalt flats on my VP and basic IV.
Great job here! What software are y'all using?

Sounds like a fair test, one that the PF will probably fail miserably since at 1kHz they would probably look very similar but at frequencies under 100Hz you just can't replace pounds of iron. again specs...1kHz is a very forgiving place to test a bass amp but also doesn't tell you much.....flatness across the audible band at higher power levels tells you more but it can be viewed as unrealistic so....definitely worth a try if you have access to both..

I do know that when my PF350 worked, it was a decent amp for Upright bass because it seemed to have a built in HPF.

The first time I brought out my PF50T, I immediately got bass feedback and had to use an HPF.

100Hz and lower is pretty much the entire range of the bass knob on my amp. I'm confused, does that mean Tube watts will be louder than SS watts when my bass is performing its main function, pumping out hard hitting bass notes?

the lower you go in freq, the harder the amp works. in this case the comparison is between a Class D amp vs a more traditional tube Class AB design. the reason an SVT head weighs almost 100 pounds is the iron in the transformers which with the filters deliver instant energy ‘on tap’ when needed. because of this the SVT can do this all day long (at the expense of weight) where Class D can only do this for a finite amount of time relying on the assumption that these power levels are only necessary in short transients...make sense? the upside on the Class D operation is a much smaller lighter FF, which is very appealing to the gigging bassist. sonically there really is no comparison. these are very involved questions since there are so many variables that differently vary in importance to different users hence there really isn’t a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer..
