[crank rant] SUVs are the worst of all possible vehicles. They combine the worst traits of a station wagon, a pickup truck, and a van, while having none of the advantages of any of them. They have the limited capacity of a station wagon, and often more limited than a comparable station wagon. But, they are far more inefficient, take up more space, are ungainly, and handle like crap. They have hard tops, so you can't load them like a pickup truck. They are enclosed, but do not have the short nose of a van, so visibility is limited by that long, often high, snout. They don't have the carrying capacity of a van and often take up more room. My old full sized Chevy van was actually shorter than a number of SUVs with far less usefulness. And it didn't handle much worse, if at all. SUVs typically handle like crap or are a bad joke in some other way. If you see a ding dong spiraling out of control on a snowy, icy hill in Seattle, the ding-a-link is nearly always driving an AWD SUV or a jacked up pickup truck. Useless writ large.[/crank rant]

For what its worth, I wouldn't consider a Subie an SUV. Those are station wagons that just happen to have AWD.

My Mopar love starts in 1971 with the Challenger, in 1972 with the Charger and wraps up in 1973 with the Cuda (1970 goes to the Mustang Boss 429).

Since this is a Thunderbird club and we're veering off topic I'll wrap up my thoughts on the issue by going back to the original goal post - in no way shape or form did Lee invent SUVs in the mid 1980's. Not even close, that's revisionist history in the making. Vehicles from many different companies had offerings that fit every attribute of an SUV and they existed decades before Lee introduced the Cherokee.
Did he invent the term "SUV"? IDK, maybe he did, wouldn't surprise me, he was very much into marketing, but even on that front I think I remember Ford calling the Bronco a Sport Utility truck in the late 1960's. But no, Lee didn't invent the SUV.

Nuff said, I'm back on to thunderbirds now...

That can certainly be agonizing and you have my sympathies. Waiting for an instrument is no small deal! Soon and very soon...! Once you play the VP, you will forget all about the wait. I am so interested in your take on it after you get it to your liking.

Just a quick reply to say it arrived around 9:30 PM last night. I didn’t have the energy to do anything other than make sure it was ok. It is. The finish looks to be in better shape than I expected. It seems to be on the lighter side. The fretboard is dark, needs cleaning and a fret polish. I’ll plug it in tonight and make sure everything works. Oh, and the headstock is massive. Here’s an initial pic:

It seems to be on the lighter side. The fretboard is dark, needs cleaning and a fret polish. I’ll plug it in tonight and make sure everything works. Oh, and the headstock is massive.

Looks like the one I just got, sans case and toes! Haven't had time to clean mine yet either, had to get a fridge replacement first. What's more important, cold food or a clean Bird? You know where my head was at, wife out voted me

It's funny with Thunderbird tone. I think you can somewhat find some middle ground, with the modern ones playing through modern SS amps like GK and vintage ones playing though tube amps.

Did you ever give any kind of review on this? How was the Tbird with the Embassy 760's? Have you ever done a side-by-side with an Epiphone Vintage Pro Tbird? That way we can verify both the Tbird and Embassy do indeed have the same PUPs.

How do you think the Embassy sounds 760 vs Chinabuckers?

I'm having Chinabuckers put in my Thunderjazz, so I'll be able to compare it to 3 Embassy's and the Lull T5, but that's still a week or so off. If I don't like the Chinabuckers in the Thunderjazz, I'll put one or two 760s in it (maybe starting at the neck or bridge as someone recommended above).

Always interested in hearing other VP owners string journey. Seems like just about every string I try on mine sounds great. Running Fender 7150 round nickels right now but due for a change soon.
