Thunderbird Club

It seems like every Thunderbird on eBay these days is in Japan. Sometimes, there are more than one of the exact same bass for sale at different prices and shipping numbers. eBay is a very bizarre place now.

Never mind all that, the ESP is something a little different.

I think it's because there are guitar brokers who sell someone else's guitar/bass for more and then buy it for less from the original seller to send to the buyer - or something like that... I really don't understand how it works but I've seen it before.

Getting close, he asked with or without neck ring, I said with. Opinions?

General rule of thumb is ring around body mounted pu and no ring over the pg mounted pu, at least for buckers.

Is that astroturf?

Ha, I've thought about it, and many have asked, but no, just a green shag rug.

That was fast. Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Yeah, I thought it would take more time, but John whipped it out! Very excited to get going on it. John did ask what I was using to paint, and recommended instead of a nitro clear coat I go with the acrylic clear that pairs with the car paint, just to reduce risk of incompatibility. I already have nitro on the way, but I'm definitely planning on testing it with the color coat to see if they react to each other. The acrylic clear would certainly cut down on dry time...my only concern is would it age and yellow the same way? Hmmmm.

Acrylic will amber over time, but not like lacquer. If spraying lacquer thinly it takes as long to fully cure but can be used sooner than 2-3 weeks. It 'false' drys very quickly as long as you keep coats thin. If applied thick you will run into many problems, full curing being one of them. I use matte/satin lacquer which lays down nice and has a nice feel and look - less shiny and more 'vintage' looking. It also naturally buffs out to a sheen where interfaced playing.

Interesting. I don't need it to yellow like crazy, I just like the idea of it aging as the years go by, so some but not as nitro is fine. Is there any you'd recommend? This is the clear from the same place I'm getting the color: Spray Paint Clearcoat | AutomotiveTouchup
I will be going with light coats, I want to keep the finish from being very thick. I'm mostly aiming for it to look like it just rolled off the factory assembly line, and then age with use.

As a side note, I'musing Stew-Mac's white vinyl sealer, that will be a fine base for the acrylic color to go on, correct?

I’ve baited him plenty. He says he’ll never do it. But he likes us and thinks we’re entertaining.
I visit family in Winter Garden(FL) which is very close to him. I've offered to bring my NR up there for him to try, since it might be less intimidating than a reverse. Nope.

I use readily hardware store available Zinsser Cover Stain oil-based primer/stain blocker/bond coat (rattle can) for a white, quick drying, flat sheen, easily sand-able base coat under colours. For clears I usually use lacquer from Stew Mac or ReRanch. You can get a decent DIY look with rattle-cans but for a 'factory' look it will require wet-sanding between coats and buffing after fully cured. And it's not like lacquer instantly amber's - it's clear as acrylic but over time it will amber, especially if exposed to UV rays/sunlight. Again - light coats, wet sanding, layers, respecting cure times and final buffing will result in a nice finish.

I never try to convince someone to be a motorcyclist. But if they are interested in exploring that endeavor, I'll give them as much advice based on my experiences as I can - the good, bad and ugly. T-birds are not for everyone.

Yeah, I wasn't attempting to twist his arm. I just happen to be close enuff to offer. He nicely passed. No problem, offer's on the table.

Traditional installation is no ring on a pup in the pickguard, only on pups without a pickguard surrounding them. But nothing says you have to be a traditionalist. FWIW - I like it better without.

Nothing traditional about me, e.g., my avatar bass. The no-ring PUPs look unfinished to me, like they were trying to save a buck by not including it.

Does anyone with a BaCH and Original bird know if the tail pieces have the same screw pattern? Wondering if I should fill the tail piece screw holes if I'm going to eventually upgrade to a more accurate claw.
it’s been awhile but if I recall, the holes lined up but the replacement screws that came with the claw didn’t offer optimum purchase..

I think once you are a card carrying member of AARP, you are forced to acquiesce to being a grown up.
Doesn't seem to be working for some.:eyebrow: Unfortunately I don't mean that as a cute complement. When I was young I used to think that adults were really smart and wise. Now that I'm older I know better. Way too many are just children in adult bodies. Fortunately everybody here is very mature and serious minded.:woot:
