Andii makes very good points. I worry about damaging my 50th GoldBird, but I still play it. Just not as aggressively as I play my other basses. I would buy the ebony Bird. It is half the cost and already broken in so you aren't going to be as concerned about hurting it. And honestly there is not a huge difference in sound between my 2001 ebony Bird and the gold one. I actually give the edge to the ebony one, but then I have some odd connection with that bass. Hope it works out for you either way!!

Hi Andy,

Do you happen to know how many units have been made of the 50th anniversary Goldbird? I think I might have seen the figure of 1000 units somewhere, but can't seem to find that information anywhere... Also they seem to be sold out pretty much everywhere except for a couple of select online stores...

I already have a deal more or less set up with the seller for the 2nd hand ebony bird, and just saw they dropped the price for the Goldbird as well... Oh the dilemma... ;)

Hey man! I really have no idea how many Gibson claims were made. The 1000 sounds familiar for some reason, but I can't remember where I would have heard it. Gibson usually says on their website if it's a limited run of say 400 like in the Guitar of the Week program from a few years back. But in this case they only referred to it as a "Limited Edition" so that could mean they were only producing them in 2013, which makes sense given the anniversary of the model. I don't know why they didn't do some kind of special inlay on the fretboard like they are doing for the 120th anniversary. Would have been an easy thing to do.

I think which model you buy depends on what you are using it for ultimately. If you want the gold as more of a collectable than a player, then that is the way to go. But if you want a Bird for gigging and taking abuse, then I would go with the ebony one. Having to choose between which Bird to buy is a great dilemma to have :woot:

The ultimate solution would be to buy them both if I could rise the money - I could get them both for the price of a 2014 model... :)

Hey all- just added a 2011 Epi T-Bird Pro IV in Vintage Sunburst last Sunday. Loving it...
Two questions though-
1.) is it my imagination, but does this bass sound REALLY close to that "Classic" Gibby growl when the onboard EQ is set flat? And...
2.) Can I please join the Club? :)

rickwebb, I've added you to the club, you're #463 the list is on the previous page right now - due to size constraints. You owe us all a picture soon tho! ;)

Speaking of parts...

I'm about to mod two of my Epi birds with chrome hardware - I already have 2 sets of chrome pickup covers and pickup rings, bought from Invalid Link Removed in Germany.
These covers are really shallow compared to the Epi pickups, so the pickups will sit pretty low in regards to the strings. I've noticed on old T-birds and newer repros there seems to be some sort of black spacer underneath the pickup rings - Where can I get those, and in case I have to make them myself, then what material are they made of and what are the height of them (assuming the bridge pickup spacer is higher than the neck space)?

I did see them on the Thunderbucker Ranch website after my post, but gather I would have to make them myself - Are the neck and bridge spacer of different hight, or are they the same and would you happen to know what height they are?

They are .090 plastic, both of them. ThunderBucker Ranch are exact replicas of my original 60s ones. They will fit the rings you bought.

Any UK members know of anywhere that sells Chrome Pup covers here in the UK? Would love them on a Classic Pro IV whenever I get one!

Your best bet would be to order them from Invalid Link Removed in Germany, they have pretty fast delivery and you won't have to pay import taxes since it's from an EU country. Also they have both covers and matching pickup rings, and the biggest selection to choose from: Nickel, Chrome, Gold and Black Chrome (haven't seen those elsewhere) - The only thing they don't have are the pickup ring spacers...

Thanks Carlo!!!

Exactly the information I needed... I have a big sheet of black rubber 2,3 mm thick, which I plan to use for this... Will try that out first, and if that doesn't work out well, I can always order them from Thunderbucker Ranch... :)

Thank you so so much!

Looking into bass tuners for my bird. Any suggestions? I know there's gotoh, hipshot and such, but i'd want something unconventional but can still fit and work on the headstock with ease. Thanks. So far, my bass is holding tune, just that D string tuner is crazy loose.

What exactly do you mean by unconventional...?

Hair or boots! Hmmmmm...........Metallic Pink :woot:

Shame you didn't get the pinkburst one, while it was on auction, then... ;)
