Thunderbird Club

2021 Nonreverse Thunderbird update. pickups are humbucking alnico five 60's spec. This information comes directly from high up at Gibson. Delivery eta April.

Thanks for the update! Any insight on the neck? The 2012-ish re-issues had a pretty large volute and were a bit wider at the nut. Wondering if they are going with that version or if they are doing a more, "historically accurate" version?

I don't know what the '60s necks are like, but not only are the 2013 necks a little wider at the nut than the Reverse (not P neck wide), but the neck is also very noticeably thicker. Not sure what problem people have with the volute, other than it not being historically-accurate.

I have been "anti-volute" since the late 1980's......;)

noob question here is it hard to set up a cab with amp head because I always used combo amps.
No, you just need the proper speaker cable. Not an instrument cable. Should be straight forward, only thing to be extra careful about is matching impedance values - shouldn’t be scary if one head to one cab in most cases.

Since it seems to be Goth day I want to play... I bought this body for a build that never happened, and it's been sitting under my bedroom dresser for 13ish years. My almost 14 year old son (who began playing bass last year) started asking me about it the other day. Long story short, we ordered a Goth neck and a bridge on eBay and he'll be the proud new owner of a Goth Epi Thunderbird once those arrive and I put it all together. He's already gone through and thoroughly cleaned and polished the body (after I took this photo), so he may be just a bit excited about adding it to his collection (fretless Squier Jazz, Kentucky mandolin, a trumpet, and a trombone). I've realized I'm raising one just like me!
Right on! It’s great to do stuff like that with your kid.

It isn't difficult because you use combo amps, there are other reasons...

No, it isn't difficult. The stuff is designed to be almost idiot proof*. The cab will have only one or two places to plug things in and if there are two, they will be wired in parallel, so it doesn't matter which you use. On the amp, just read the labels as they are pretty self-explanatory and if stuck, read the manual.
