Thunderbird Club

I don't remember paying that much for the pickguard on my '15, but then I don't remember at all. It's worth it! and mine is set up with the same tapes as G's '15. Those pickups make tapes sound far stronger and more aggressive than you would expect from tapes.
Agree on the tapes, and will add that they are a players dream for slides and fast playing plus with the 2015 pups I hear an exceptionally strong attack and creamy decay.

Haven’t tried them with a pick yet (because I suck at pick playing) but I’d bet with the tone rolled all the way down you could nail the Animals song House of the Rising Sun and with it all the way up you could probably do a solid cut on the Yes song Roundabout. Going from a Gibby 335 hollow body sound to a Rick sound without changing basses or strings is a pretty neat feat for any bass.

disclaimer: I don’t know for a fact which basses were used by the Animals and Yes for those recordings, I’m going by recollection (which seems to fail me more these days) and I’m too damn lazy to look it up.

That is a puzzlement, I've taken my VP out and about several times in one of my Gibson cases.
If the Gibson case fits a '70s Gibson, it might fit a VP. I'll check again, but it sure didn't look promising when I tried to put it in the '15's case. I thought it would fit, since there's a bit of room beyond the headstock when the '15 is in the case. But it the VP banged up and over the edge. If I can make it fit, that would be good, since I don't particularly want yet another case to store somewhere.

The Animals used an Epiphone Rivoli, which is an EB-2 with a different logo. That's the classic EB-2 sound.

I finally found an Epiphone Thunderbird on Reverb that was inexpensive and needed some finish and electrical work so I bought it! It arrived yesterday!

Unfortunately the seller doesn't understand how to pack and ship such a long bass, crammed it into what I assume is a standard length box, and it's now ruined. Neck is cracked on both sides of the headstock. Certain death.

In my opinion the act of shipping a musical instrument should be approached with the same care and attention as lovemaking - If it don't fit, DON'T FORCE IT!

Ugh, I feel just sick that another 'Bird bit the dust. I would rather they just removed the neck before shipping. And now I have to wait until FedEx pays his claim to get my money back; not a big deal, just a minor pain...

Not giving up, I'll not be between 'Birds forever.

I'll ride anything with two wheels and figure out what makes it fun. Riding a Harley while wearing a hi-viz yellow textile suit and plain white full-face helmet confuses the pirates. That's ornery fun in it's own right. I may be shallow, but I'm also shameless and incapable of going along with the program.

I'll probably never own a Harley unless it's one of the new adventure bikes they just came out with. And then only in enough years that it's cheap. Until then, I have a bike that's a whole lot faster and more nimble than any Harley, and another one that's a whole lot more nimble and goes places a Harley would shudder at. Those are a blast, too.
Nothing says HOG like high viz...

:(Hate to put a like on that post (but I put a like on every post I read, that way I know where I left off). Sounds like you won’t be out any funds eventually, and you’ve got a healthy outlook on things (get another bird), thats important. Life’s too short to be perpetually pissed off, best to move forward and make the best of things, just as you’re doing. Better luck next time.

On the bright side, once the headstock falls off it’ll easily fit back into the shipping box from whence it came. :D

Amen, that's good advice right there. I learned that lesson a long time ago but only recently have been able to apply it (sparingly).

On the bright side, once the headstock falls off it’ll easily fit back into the shipping box from whence it came.

LOL, you have the unique ability to find the bright side of a turd, don't cha?

Thanks for the encouragement.

Can you buy the carcass from the seller at a discount and make a 7enderbird out of it?

Well, make a project out of the body if you don't have to send it back for the refund. Or offer it up here; plenty here who would put it to use.

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of these guys. Unique sound but at the same time reminds me of a different band, maybe Yes.
Did get a kick out of the audience, almost all of them looked like they’d rather be somewhere else - LOL.
They were big on the L.A. scene in the seventies. Saw them live. They're different.

I've got three cases for reverse Thunderbirds. My VP only fits in the latest Epiphone one.

Playing update (feel free to ignore):

I was back at the hand clinic today. Poked and prodded by some residents, got to see a resident get quizzed on gross anatomy, reading MRIs, and surgical approaches. The innervation is unlikely to improve with surgical intervention on the nerve (muscles have atrophied too much already). Instead we are going to do some fancy wiring on tendons to regain functionality. Surgery scheduled for 4 August. The strange part to me; I won't be out for the surgery; it's being done under nerve block. Recovery enough to type by 2 weeks, to play by 4.

TLDR; back to playing by labour day!
