I guess I’d feel compelled to play a P bass if I were in that band.
Just last night I watched a program that went into detail about how Tina Turner post divorce was flat broke and raising her and Ike's 4 kids alone and times were really tough. She was gigging at small bars and cleaning houses on the side to make ends meet. Can you imagine that? It's 1979-1980 and Tina Turner is your cleaning lady? Just crazy. Anyway, her career was resurrected by David Bowie when he blew off his own album release party to go see her perform in NYC. When the record execs heard that Bowie wasn't going to be at his own album release event so that he could attend Turner's event at the Ritz, there was a mad scramble to get tickets for her show and the next morning she had 5 contract offers and the rest is history. About a year after Bowie put eyes back on her talent, the album "Private Dancer" came out and she was launched into super-stardom. Lots of number ones, movies and she became the IT girl for a good long while. She's now retired and living in France.

I love seeing Thunderbirds being used by recording and touring artists but I cannot for the life of me understand the popularity of this very blah band. It hardly qualifies as music to me but they have careers and are making bank.

Interesting. I lot of that I never knew. Clearly she has a phenomenal work ethic in addition to phenomenal talent. Unfortunately, according to her kids it came at a cost of her family. According to them she had little to do with them it was not a mother to them, even when there was time. Priorities are tough to balance and sometimes one of those priorities is going to get the short end of the stick when the other priority is more of a priority. Probably not that uncommon in the music or entertainment industry, but just a little shocking for a mother to do that to her children. Men you can see that more easily happening since a fair number of them are and can be [choice descriptor here]. I'm a man and can bash my own kind!
Indeed! That is even being kind.I admit I do like a couple of their songs, but haven't heard many. I find that true of a lot of bands these days. Yes I'm just getting older and I am likely stubborn with musical likes. Often I'll turn on a concert on YouTube or some channel of a fairly popular band or recent band and just can't do it. Some of the stuff from the UK seems more like a gimmick and they see who can be the most different. (Having one pant leg cut off and two different color eye shadows really isn't interesting or indicating talent or ability to me--but does to some people it seems. Hey, they're getting paid to play and I'm home watching!) Sometimes I'll stick around and watch for more than a song or two looking for something that might turn interesting and my wife will often say, "OK, you got to get off of that!" I really try to expand what I like and listen to, but sometimes I just can't do it. We all like different things, and I suppose some of what I like would be off-putting to some. Well, likely not, I have exceptional taste!

The lead guitarist in my kids' band which plays rock and metal said that he was going to quit the band and concentrate on writing and producing music similar to Silversun Pickups which made me curious about their music. I'm not sure he's in the band any longer since he's missed the last 5 band events(gigs and rehearsals) but claims he's still in the band. He's also missing tomorrow night's gig which is about 15 minutes from his house. So anyway... I went on YouTube and found a fan created playlist and really tried to listen to it. I think I put in about 45 minutes and just had to turn it off. Boring, dry and uninspired playing and vocals.
My thought was good luck with that kid... he's got shredding skills and he's going to shoot for Silversun Pickups?

I've liked their albums and seen them live a number of times. Different tastes I guess.

I got to admit shredding is interesting--for a little bit and once in a while--but after that I personally don't find it interesting. Starts sounding all the same in some ways to me. But fully realize it takes skill. (Haven't watched the clip yet.) But more power to those who love it, and music I don't like.
Here are two I find interesting musically. I admit, I like the music much better than the (male) singing. It's just not me and I realize that.
