I would avoid flying if at all possible. Used to be a classy event. Now you get more class on a Greyhound. Not that I would do that either if it could be avoided.That's really amazing that in 50 plus years you haven't had the occasion to fly anywhere. Really amazing.
The only reason for me to fly is to reach far away places and see people and experience things that are outside of the ordinary.
My last flight was to spend 2 weeks including Xmas and NYE in Hawaii with the wife and kids... that was pre-pandemic.
Next flight is coming up in November to Charlotte, NC just for the heck of it to see a couple of concerts for sure, maybe 3 concerts and play some golf and have dinner with friends. 5 days. No wives.
I can understand why you'd want to get a way for a few days. What's the small circular thing (mirror?) on the tree?
Those old radial engines impart a pleasant vibration that can get you off to sleep. The modern turboprop is a little (only a little) quieter, but doesn't have anywhere near the vibration; probably better from a maintenance perspective.

Beautiful area, lots of great golf in both the Carolinas. If you get a chance, drive out to the outer banks. Rent a Jeep up around Corolla and drive out on the beach for lunch. Spend a nice relaxing night in Duck. Drive down to Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills for some hiking fun on the dunes. Or hit the 4 major light houses (Currituck, Bodie, Hatteras, Ocracoke) for some interesting tours and history. Sounds awesome but I'm probably not going to have time to click off any of those things much less go see my sister in King, NC but I'll try to go see her.
My theory is that if there's somewhere I need to go that requires flying there, then I don't need to go. Remember, I used to drive 18 wheelers up to 600 miles a night. I absolutely get it and in no way was being critical. I've done my fair share of cross country driving myself... not anywhere to the extent that you have but I did some cool stuff.
2016 - took the whole family on a tour of our amazing country west of the Mississippi. 6,000 miles in 2 weeks. The wife drove for a total of about two hours.
Multiple times since 2013 - drove nonstop to Ft. Myers, 1,340 miles in about 21 hours. The wife won't go on those trips anymore... she makes me get a hotel somewhere between Tennessee and Georgia.
My best 600 miler was a 8.5 hours from Detroit to Albany when I was a kid in 1985. Mountain Dew and gasoline!
Air to air refueling. Don't recall exactly where, but somewhere over the Atlantic.
