Wow! To get an original/true MXR Phase 90 can get costly! But I admit I wouldn't sell mine for twice the high price.

This is the one to get Miles for the real deal MXR. Or one like it. Much earlier and you must use batteries only (and had no LED).

(He has the wrong year, should be '73....)
I'd love to do a blind test with an original Phase 90 and the Whirlwind.

Me too. I know MXR's Reissue '74 Scrip is handwired and said to sound almost exactly like the originals, but there is a very slight difference.

I know during the MXR days there was some variation in parts used, so some years or pedals may sound slightly better or different than others.

Not the same as in person, but.... Don't watch the first time. I won't say what I thought.

Odd about lack of bottom. Boomers are known for plenty of that. But it just may not be a good match. For me, some basses sound better with some strings and definitely not with others. I find that true when changing rigs, different strings are often needed. But don't sweat it at all if they don't work. Life is too short for bad tone!
Sometimes I swear my hearing changes. When I went through some songs last night with the '21, I thought the tone sucked. I didn't touch a thing on the amp or the bass. Then after about 45 minutes it sounded great.

You are not alone. I've used a certain bass and strings in recent years at church--same everything else--and one week absolutely love the tone, then a week or so later use the same bass and strings and wonder what happened and why I'm not over the top about the tone. Not that it's bad, but not "wow" factor I recalled. I know sound people say things like pressure, humidity and other things to do factor in, but you wouldn't think it would be that noticeable.

Yeah. They don't always get the settings in the same exact position, and they're pretty sensitive. In the first one the '70s MXR sounds warmer/more muted. But either way, in a mix I bet you'd never hear the difference.

When I talked to Gibson about the paint imperfection on my first nr bird they sent it was definitely hinted at that they didn’t know when or if they were going to continue production on these
That makes no sense. If true, they're really letting a lot of players down. Just speculating, but I'll bet Hipshot is having a hard time supplying Ultra-lights.

The wife and I just celebrated our 37th anniversary on Wednesday. She’s a keeper - she keeps me in cars and guitars and every other hobby I spend money on. She’s much lower maintenance than I am, just an occasional diamond here or there. it doesn’t get any better.

Am I missing something? For two grand I can get a bass played by a fictional cartoon character?
Congrats on the annisvery. We celebrated 37 in June. Like you, I'm much higher maintenance.

The fano is great.. Action is spot on.. Honestly like the pickups in the new bird better than the lollars

V did a recent demo of hers.
And they sound soooooo much better to me then the TB+’s do.

Me no expert.
But those new Bird pups sound a bit similar to Lollars, ‘cept.
With more bite.
Have the girth, but with a bit more clarity.

time for a change?:D

I actually thought the Whirlwind sounded a slight bit better and had more nuance due to not being as warm as the others. But the Whirlwind is how my 90 sounds. It has some swooshing thing that is more dynamic and multi-dimentional that others seem to lack. But the mix is the real test. I'd have phasers sounding good by themselves but in a mix it's either not dynamic enough to stand out a little or it's too much of something going on and was a bit much. (And I don't go for funky or crazy with it. About 10:00 does it for me.) On one of those clips it seemed like the Whirlwind was a little faster at the same setting. Maybe it was me. From what I can tell, I know why you love the Whirlwind.
