Thunderbird Club

I think the VPs are a little shy in the lows as well--compared to the 64s, which is why I like Boomers or Round Core Boomers on at least one VP.

Hence my trading for Scott's Gibson pickups, I just haven't had time to work on that bass..............

My current issue with trigeminal neuralgia affects my left eye. The neurologist said it isn’t related to my botched wisdom teeth extraction forty years ago. But I wonder.
That may be an interesting investigation. My wife has had a two year long odyssey with trigeminal neuralgia, which onset was subsequent to a visit to a dentist.

Double cutaway Saturday!

I’ll just chime in on the CB’s
A bit hot in the high mids.
to my ears anyway.

So on the Mesa. I pull that back.
All the growl is still there.
But the CB’s lack in low end.

Just sayin…..

That’s kinda what I was afraid of. Due to supplier problems I ended up having to go with Chinabuckers for the Bling bird. If it doesn’t work out I’ll probably just flip them out for thunder buckers or lulls.

I plan on starting with optima golds, which are a relatively deep string, not far off the boomer in sound.

I have Gibson pups in my anniversary bird and it is indeed warmer sounding than my VP (almost to a fault) but the VP does grit and grind better than the Gibby and seems to have adequate lows for me with the tone knob rolled off.

Right now the planned starting point on the Bling Bird is three pups, each one through a 1meg ohm stacked vol/tone pot and each pot with a .022uf cap. Keeping in mind the body is a semi hollow design with a maple cap, I expect it to be fairly mid focused. I have 500K ohm pots and .047uf caps I can use if needed. The circuit calls for a 250K ohm resistor between pots to prevent bleed over, so that might shave a bit of the top end off.

Honestly, this bird is a total crapshoot for me on sound, nothing about it is anything like my other birds - the woods, construction, the number and type and placement of pups, the type and value of pots, resistors, caps - all are completely different than any bird I own or have played. Probably the closest thing to it that I’ve seen is a three pup bird @Dadagoboi built except his was a more traditional solid body and wood selection IIRC. Should be an interesting journey.

What are your thoughts on the Chinabuckers? Any good? Similar to the Eppi VP pups? Similar to the new Gibby NR pups?

…Eybuckers not recommend for studio use… less aggressive than Epi pups… for stage use less muddy than black plastic covered Gibson pups… the new Gibson NR pups maybe better, but not yet tested (stage and recording) …. not to forget the Japanese Greco, Maxon etc… and Lull, Lollar and Thunderbuckers and other handwounds… what works best for you depends on loud drummers, noisy guitars etc… my cover band mates prefer the babybird (black plastic covers..)

Double cut or single cut, both equally fun…

I really need to see your collection some day.
Well, the lights work, at least.... FedEx decided they didn't want to deliver today, even though it was on the truck "out for delivery" :banghead: , so maybe Monday I'll have my new speaker, & can check the rest

....or maybe I could run from the pre-amp out to the effects return on my Max 250? Check everything but the power amp?
Very cool. And all the knobs and buttons. You’re close enough to run it over to Chucky if there are issues you can’t tackle. That is if he decides to come back from Europe. You ought to be able to slave the Max and have quite the rig.

I’ve had that Fed Ex issue a few times. If it’s shipped FedEx Ground, it’ll only be delivered Mon-Friday. If it’s shipped FedEx Home Delivery, it’ll be delivered seven days a week. They even go through separate sorting centers and operate like two different businesses, at least around here.
