Tolex vs. Carpet

I prefer tolex because my cat has a tendency to see carpeted cabs as a big, loud scratching post.

The carpet just gets dirty after a while, it picks up all these bits of dirt and what not.

A lot of people here are going to say tolex, but I prefer carpet. I think it looks nicer. People complain about the carpet picking smells like cig smoke from bars, but I don't have that problem.

Yeah, carpet is more durable than tolex, but I use speaker cab covers that keep damage to a minimum.

IMO, carpet (aka rat fur), is funky. it picks up everything (except chicks), can get smelly, damp and starts looking really bad after a few years (pill balls and fuzzy). on the other hand, IMO beat up tolex has mojo, however, i use padded covers on all of my amps when moving them from gig to gig so they end up looking like new all the time

I much prefer tolex. Carpet looks awful once it gets beat-up, whereas tolex, though it gets beat-up faster, looks much cooler.

Isn't DuraTex basically the same thing as a Rhino Lining for your truck bed? The stuff you paint on?

Duratex is a good product and the guys at Acrytech are really nice, very easy to work with. Duratex is not even close to Rhinoliner, Line-X, or any of those types of coatings. It's a water-based, single-stage system unlike the plural iso-based systems sprayed on trucks. We used to use a lot of it and it's very flexible and very forgiving, especially helpful if your a hobbyist, and the fact that it can accept tints is another big plus. The big names that use it, including Community Sound, use oven or infra curing systems to increase the hardness.
