Tool already started on new album O.O

10,000 days production wise is excellent. I just want more than 5 songs that aren't ambient noise.

Quality wise it's excellent. Musically it was 5 well written songs and filler IMO.

Calling lazy songwriting "ART" rock can only get you so far.

I disagree completely. The production and sound quality of 10,000 days far surpasses their previous albums. Overall it is more focused, professional, full, and dynamic. Their first few albums (while they do have a great sound going and some sweet songs) dont sound nearly as good IMO purely from a production/mixing standpoint. I dont know the people who produce/mix their cds so I'm not bashing them in any way, just the sound Tool comes across with is alot more rich on Lateralus and especially 10,000 days.

To grant you a point though, I think Lateralus was a big turning point in their sound evolution. They kind of went from the angsty post-punk kind of vibe to the more complex and developed epic "art-rock" if you want to call it that. They thought about the songs alot more and it shows, and they wanted to reflect that in the way they sounded.

All IMO, dont hate me please. I love Tool!

I couldnt agree with you more. To me Jambi, The Pot, and Wings for Marie Pt. 1 and 2 sound SOOO full and rich.

I wasnt overly excited about the lack of ACTUAL songs either, but I love the songs so much I didnt mind it, and I actually like a few of the filler tracks.

Maybe I'm just not too good at math, but I count 7 well written songs, if you combine Wings 1 &2 and Lost Keys with Rosetta Stoned. I see two filler tracks, Lipan Conjuring and Viginti Tres.

That covers all 11 of the tracks...

I'll admit, I was underwhelmed when I first listened to 10,000 Days, but the more I listen to it, the better it gets. Intension and Right In Two are anything but filler, they just don't stick out as much on the first few listens.

Tool's my favorite band. They have been for about 15 years now (I'm getting too old ). 10,000 is definitely not my favorite album, but it's finally starting to grow on me after listening to it very sparingly over the past couple years. As an album, the songs don't have the same sort of unified feel like Undertow has, and they don't seem to fit together in the same fashion as Aenima and Lateralus do. Not a big Opiate fan either- I kind of dismiss that one, although it's still good for what it is. I'm very interested in hearing what they do next.

And while they're at it, they need Paul D'Amour back.

I doubt even Paul would agree with that Justin's a monster at what he does.

I don't mind waiting 5 years between albums because I have yet to be disappointed even once by them, live, on album, everything. You can trace my musical and life story through Tool releases, quite literally. Love love love them.

I absolutely adore 10,000 Days by the way. The history behind it, what with Maynard's mom and all, was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had in relation to music. I rank it alongside Opiate, Undertow, and Salival as extraordinary works. Then I consider Lateralus and ÆNIMA both pure masterpieces in every possible sense of the word.

Yeah I thought it was really interesting how he tied in his mother with the album. Wings part 1 and 2 are some of the most heart felt songs Ive ever heard.

Tool's music has been suffering from some fairly poor production values of late. I thought Lateralus sounded pretty weak - overly compressed, no guts, thin sounding guitars, tinny bass, weak vocals, etc. I didn't even bother with 10,000 Days; from what I've heard, it sounds like more of the same. They need to get Sylvia Massey back at the helm.

And while they're at it, they need Paul D'Amour back.

Yes, Judith became infinitely clear to me after 10,000 Days. Before that, I used to think Judith was just a play on words of Judas.

I've been a dedicated Tool fan for eleven years. I agree with an earlier poster that Tool can't make a bad album. Obviously, they are capable. I just don't think they would allow it. Here's my order of Tool albums from fav to least fav.

1. Aenima
2. 10,000 Days
3. Lateralus
4. Salival
5. Undertow
6. Opiate

I love 10,000 Days. Vicarious gets stuck in my head all the time!

I liked the producing of David Botrill (Laterus, Aenima) then
the producing on 10kd (Joe Barrasi), but by no means
do i think 10kd is a weak album. "The Pot" and "Rosetta
Stoned" are worth the price of admision alone.

Laterus is probably my favorite, mainly because it is the
most "Krimsony" of them. I saw King Crimson open up for
Tool in 2001 in berkeley, it was one of the best shows
i'd ever seen. KC was as heavy as tool on that tour and
i think they got alot of fans who normally wouldn't listen
to them as well (there were 2 types of fans at that show -
20-25 year olds & the grey ponytail types).

Danny Carey is one of the best drummers out there, esp
in the prog metal category, he really makes that band.

I really can't wait for the next album, I hope they continue the progression they've had since Opiate. Each album is unique and amazing and amazing.

I think Undertow and Opiate get knocked unfairly, because, in a live context, those songs hold up right alongside anything from their later catalog. Seeing them play Flood the last time I saw them was one of the greatest parts of the show, because the song is just so freakin' awesome.
