Totally amateur recordings thread

An updated version of a track I posted previously... It needed another part added, otherwise one of our band members would have to play tambourine or maracas or something when we play it live. Originally I wanted to come up with a clavioline-type keyboard part for it, but nothing really worked... So I tried different ideas for a 2nd guitar part and was similarly frustrated, until I decided on an improvised, somewhat sparse part in the lower range of the guitar with longer notes for the verses; something simple and rhythmic for the choruses; and something simple, melodic, and harmonic to fit over the ending... Hopefully we will start incorporating it into our live sets soon.

I meant to comment on this, but never got around to it until now...

This track sounds great as-is, but I'd also like to hear it with some drums and percussion, like something from Santana or War. I think that would be an interesting addition to an already nice sound.

Cool thanks yeah - I had forgotten all about that one! Always felt it was "groovy" in that early 70's kinda way. ;)

And yeah, I have one helluva full percussion racks downstairs, went on a binge a few winters back. Even have an electronic drum set, but have never set it up (in storage), and I'm very clumsy at rhythms. But I've never let mere mediocrity stop me! hah!

A substantially improved take on the same tune, voice less scratchy in the high registers now. Still flubbed and stuttered some of the chords, and accidentally swapped the last two verses. Recorded on my Zoom Q8 this time but using a much lesser amp, I like the sound of the other one better, to be honest. Anyway, here it is, a progress report, as it were. Work continues lol.

LOL I was getting into "feeling it" so much that I stumbled on chords and sang the last two verses out of order! hehe. But thanks, really. I do love the song, and I think I'm kind of "getting there" with it. I know it's getting good when playing it "takes me away".

I was going to do a write up, even post the lyrics. I was going to post a different song about a lion tamer who switched to tigers where the lyrics were written almost word for word out of his obituary.
What the hell, This is a song, black smoke from when things were not so politically correct.

A repost from a couple of years back, just came across again and rather like it, grooving out a bit... long repetitive atmospheric ambient noodling on bass clarinet and electric guitar, a reflection on the death of a coworker and friend:

Here I go again.... Always wanted to try this one, been working it up for a week now, getting there, but still flubbed a few melody notes and chords. Will attempt a full version with guitar solo when my regular rig is back online.

Right! I just dropped a few things into the sound cloud. This is one of a million I've got of weekly sessions. They are two track room recordings and what ever was happening that week in the brownroom is reflected in the recordings. It sonically does not always work out, but I thought this one stood out as clean. Certainly the vocals were up in the room's mix making it easier to add flare rather than yell or fight volume levels to the edge of feedback. You see, there was always those volume wars to hear yourself. The two track recording system can handle high pressure levels, it's us who have to control live outputs.
Here's like one of 30 or so songs played that night... 11-25-08.

Can I show you the room recording rig too? Large diaphragm russian mics going into a DBX tube pre amp with "phase 4 digital conversion". So with that, it's direct digital two track recording onto a magnetic medium.

This is the first track I ever wrote on a sequencer. The story: I was working at Kinko's, doing overnight shifts, during college. A friend who also worked there had a Roland synth/workstation and asked if I wanted to try it out. He brought it into the store right before my shift, and after giving me a brief tutorial on it, he went home. When he came back in for his shift the next morning, I had completed this track. No long afterwards, I got myself an Ensoniq synth/workstation. So much fun!

From that opening bassline, I might've called it "Mechanized Evil". :) I like.
