If you've never done a setup before, it would be best to take it into your local shop and have it done. But ask to watch and basically be "taught." I've never seen a guitar shop man that doesn't mind showing you how it's done. And it's extremely valuable to learn how to do it for yourself.

Coaxed her into moving tonight! Got 1/8 turn into it. Will let it sit overnight and measure again tomorrow evening!

Hey Mike glad to see your getting aroud to a proper setup. New truss rods can be a bugger. A little wiggle back abd forth will eventually loosen it up. Less humidity wouldn't hurt either.

The setup is best performed by you or a dedicated luthier and not a store clerk so dig in, it is tough to hurt things if you use common sense.

These videos helped me alot. Carl is right on the money.

Good luck / God speed and let me know if you need help, you have my number, I'm always willing to add moral support.

Thanks guys. It just helped to have a better allen wrench to work with. All mine were inch except for a cheap metric set. The socket was metric of course. So I borrowed a better set from work that fit the socket better and had a longer handle so I had more control and more torque to break the rod loose.

All I need to do now is find a small screw to replace the one whose head I stripped for the cover plate on the headstock and not strip any more when I adjust string height and intonation at the bridge.

Ah, good tools. Makes a difference.

I've replaced these little screws for truss rod covers etc. from a local, mom and pop, hardware store that has a great screw selection, most towns have one of these. It doesn't have to be a "guitar" screw; it just needs to fit and match.

Grrrr. Having trouble here with YouTube lately. Wonder what's up with it?

Had to find another straight edge tonight. Figured out I couldn't trust the one I was using. Was using it between two basses to do a comparison and was getting different readings. Found another straight edge and checked it.

Very good videos. Thanks for that!

I just went on and youtube worked great. Try it through the lakland page under multimedia.

I'll give that a try tomorrow night. Got worship team practice tonight.

If nothing else there's a setup guy that's going to be moving out of the area soon. I'll see if I can pick up some knowledge from him and maybe learn the business(?). Maybe that will ease some tensions in the household and provide some income for more toys.

FYI everyone...

I've been e-mailing back and forth with Julia Von Gries at Hanser Manufacturing (Traben Bass Co. (Doh!)) about coming up with some Traben straplocks for two of my basses that don't have them. One has them, so why doesn't the newest one of the three? Strange.

Anyhow, during a friendly exchange of e-mails, I find out they get their straplocks from WD Music and somehow get the Traben T custom stamped on them.

I don't know about you people, but I like the strap locks. If you like them, here's the link to the page to order them:

Tried the links on the Lakland site last night and they worked even though they take me to YouTube. Now when I go direct to YouTube and try them, they no worky. Go figure! To think I used to work in IT. Didn't have time to watch them since I had practice last night but at least I know they work from there. Thanks.

BTW, is it pronounced lackland or laykland? Alwyas wondered about that one. Maybe it's on the videos.

Finally had some time to watch the videos last night. Very informative! Hopefully I can get back to setting up the Obsession this weekend. Figure from the video I was turning the truss rod the wrong way!

And a note on the Traben cases... The covering on them is darn thin! Years of abuse on my Fender case and I've yet to scratch the covering, yet I've already scratched the covering Traben used. Otherwise it's a great case.

I got a new Hard Case from Rondo with my new SX 6-String...this is honestly one of the best hard cases I've ever seen. (I got the tweed.) I think I could throw this thing down the stairs with my bass in it and not even skip a heartbeat.

Link Removed This one. Really, if you don't need the Traben logo to be happy, I highly recommend it at the price.

Cool! I can use at least one more hard case. Can always make a stencil and airbrush a logo if I want. Price is right. Can it take the long neck? Will have to measure.
