Tricked Out Squier Club Part 2

My bass showed up in another thread, so I had to post it here too. Early 90's Squier neck, mid 90's Squier body, Wide Range Humbucker, homemade pickguard.

New pickguard made from plexiglass.

The routing for the pickup needed to be bigger, this had to be done very carefully, so I used a drill.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I used the blue wires to see if the bridge was in the correct position.

The pickup is mounted on the body instead of on the pickguard. This way you don't see the four screws holding it in place.

The front of the pickguard covered in tape. This way I could paint just the back.

Black.

I used the baby-Dremel to make all these scratches in the black paint (and the plexiglass). All scratches are quite thick and more or less vertically.

Then sprayed the thing blue.

More scratches, this time thin and horizontally.

Red.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Even more scratches. After this I sprayed it black again.

Technique?

It sounds enormous. It still has a P vibe, but much bigger. This is not just a bass, it's also a tool for blowing up amps.

I bought the pick up from a fellow player who orders loads of parts.

You may be a redneck if... you rout a guitar with a drill and cut a pg with a coping saw. Fantastic. There are some high falootin guitar techs on tb that'll flame you for using such tools on an instrument; I sir, salute you.

OT,.There was the fellow that had pulled the frets on a $1.98 bass and wanted to clean the slots up before inserting veneer for lines. Another fellow suggested some fine sandpaper glued to perhaps an old hacksaw blade and run it in the slots, dull edge down. Boy did that fellow get flamed, complete with PM's. Chainsaw were mentioned in the PM's. A cautionary tale....

Hey, Agnax. Here's a link to a 5 string tortoise pickguard for Deluxe MIM Jazz. As far as I'm concerned the patterns for MIMs and VM are the same. I can tell you that because I used my MIM tort pickguard into my VM Jazz (4 string) so I bet this is the same for fivers.

Hope this helps.

I just bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz bass this weekend. I'm really digging it. I was wondering if there are any simple mods to do that improve this bass? I like a bridge change or adding a preamp? Thanks in advance.

both of those mods would improve the bass, the preamp probably more so than the bridge.

it really just depends on what you want out of the instrument, in stock form, youve actually got yourself a pretty good modding platform.

I like the bass a lot as it stands, especially the sound of the bass. But I wouldn't mind investing a little if there were gains to be had. I would like a bridge that would allow me to remove the strings at the bridge end when changing strings instead of having to cut or straighten the ends and drawing them back through the bridge.

i believe hipshot makes a bridge like that. gotoh might too.

stewmac and all parts have tons of bridges in stock, you could find what you want there and then search for a deal on one if you dont want to buy new.

i believe guitar fetish offers one too...

here it is. i put one of these on an old ibanez for a friend, and it made a noticable difference.

Thanks for the info. The stock bridge has five mounting screws it looks like. The one in the pic has four. I'm guessing its important to find a bridge that has the same mounting alignment as stock?
