Thanks for the info. The stock bridge has five mounting screws it looks like. The one in the pic has four. I'm guessing its important to find a bridge that has the same mounting alignment as stock?

Its only important if you want a direct bolt on replacement bridge.

There's some pretty simple solutions to the number of mounting holes on the bridge vs how many holes are on the body

toothpicks + wood glue + overnight drying + chisel + a bit of sandpaper = time to drill new holes for the bridge screws :)

On my VM telebass, I swapped the stock bridge fender american bridge for string through / top load, and went from 5 to 3 holes. The footprint was relatively similar so I put tape around the edges to mark the former bridge location, filled the old holes, and dropped in the new bridge, marking the location for the new screws with dots of permenant marker. Worked fine, not crooked in the slightest, intonates perfectly.

Just go slow.

This is almost exactly how I do it too. The tooth pick trick also works well to fix stripped out strap button screw holes.

It will not fail in your lifetime.

That's comforting!

To the OP, the toothpick trick should work on any or all holes that need refilling on your squier. Including headstock screw holes from stock tuners, or stripped pickguard holes. Just dip the tip in wood glue, gently hammer the glue-end into the hole, and let it sit overnight. You can tape the area around the toothpick so the chiselling/sanding doesn't mar the finish, if you're worried.

If the hole could fit multiple toothpicks, you could still get away with 1 to add a new surface for the screw to bite into, or you can put 2-3 in with generous wood glue, or use 1 and fill the remaining area with a mix of wood/glue and sawdust.

For the neck heel I filled the hole with a wood glue and sawdust mix, hammered in 3 toothpicks per hole lightly coated in wood glue, then wiped away excess "glue putty." Chiselled and sanded the next day.

Was actually very hard to drill into once dry. Way harder than maple.

I've got a simple question, guys.

Does anyone of you is using D'Addario Chromes on your VM Jazz? I'm planning to buy a set and try them. I've heard a lot of good reviews on this strings so if you have any experience with these, please post about it. I've been playing in a Beatles tribute and a very good friend of mine told me that using flats the tone would be a lot more like Paul's. The strings I'm currently using are Fender Super Bass 7250ML (stock) on my VM J and Rotosound Swing Bass for my Deluxe MIM J. Any feedback will be very much appreciated.

Rip Topaz, jamestown, jweber76, BillyB, thanks for your information. I'll definitely go for a set of Chromes on my VM Jazz and probably in my Deluxe J too, but I was thinking of getting D'Addario XL nickels for my Deluxe J. Thanks again, guys.

I've got chromes on my CV Jazz and they have a great feel and sound. I also have a set of LaBella Deep Talking flats that I'm going to try on my FrankenSquier'd VM body. Right now I have the D'A ground flats on that guy and while I like the sound, I'm not crazy about the feel. I have no idea what strings I'll use when my FrankenJazz project with the 3-band Fender American Deluxe 'tronics installed is done. Chromes seem to be the ticket at the moment.

iJazz - Finding the right strings is like finding the right putter.

Don't forget to read the TB Bazzar section to get the lowdown about the values members get from bassstringsonline.com. Everybody raves about Jason's service and prices. I've been buying strings used, but that's where my next new set will come from.

iJazz - I'd rather be strung-up than hung-up.

- New Pots
- Straplocks
- Getting a Hipshot bassbridge to :)

Good replacement pickups? :hyper:
