Tricked Out Squier Club

Status
Not open for further replies.
May I get a number? Started out as a squier affinity jazz, and I made a few additions.
-Dimarzio Model J pups
-Wired Blend/Volume/Tone with a .1 uF cap for more extreme roll-off
-De-fretted rosewood board
-Vintage Fender threaded saddle bridge

I haven't changed the tuners yet since they seem to work for me pretty well. Stays in tune nicely, plays like a dream for a cheap bass. Though in retrospect, A p-bass would have been easier to start on.

Last night I started to hang my Squier Jazz V along with my other basses. I decided to swap the pickguard for the tort I got last week. That's when I found out that the original guard had to be put on before the pickups, because the pickup screws were holding it down.

So I started futzing around - a little too much - and I was in too deep to stop.

So I had to drill the control plate to fit the new pots and jack. Installed the Fralins. Put on the new knobs. Put on the tort guard after wrestling with it a bit. Strung it up with GHS Precison Flatwounds. Got a signal on the tuner, so that's a good sign. Got it up to pitch (2 hours later) and realized I had goofed - same reason I started this whole project now instead of later after I was going to do the refin. The pickguard was holding down the neck pickup - just the opposite problem.

Good news is it sounded pretty dern good, even with the neck pickup way too low. By the time I was done, it was midnight (late for early rising) and I had to call it quits. But I think its going to rock. Give me a couple weeks (wife is due tomorrow) and I'll get it sorted out and post pics. Had to post this up because even with the issues, I think its going to turn out good.

I'll probably fix it and play it for a while. Then next spring, I'll shoot it either orange or sonic blue. May just do the poly rough up gig. May take it down.

Hey,
So more has occurred since I posted last. I decided to add a Basslines SMB-4a PU, and modify the switching to extract as many flavors from this thing as possible. All 3 pots (T/V/V) are now push pull, and all down is Hum/phase/series. Tone pot splits the hum bridge to single, back coil on, bridge V is phase (not particularly useful), and neck is series/parallel. Sounds REALLY close to stock (maybe better?) in sing/phase in/parallel. All in, bridge solo'ed is massive! Even has a great neck solo pick tone (Not that I have any ability to play w/ a pick); I didn't do any of the electronics, so I don't know what cap, brand of pots, etc.
All I know is it is exactly what I wanted. Damn thing snarls/mwahs with Chrome flats like nothing else I've played.
I gotta fill those nasty bridge cover scars though.
Does anyone know if a P bridge cover will fit a Gotoh 201? That would be cool.
Thanks,
B.

I had a little time to work on the Squier Jazz V.

Loosened the strings, took of the pickguard, removed the neck pickup screws and cover. Had to put a little more foam under the pickup. I used the cover to figure out where it wasn't fitting through the pickguard.

I used a circular file in the opening to take some of the material off. (Same file I used to smooth the drilled control plate. I don't have a press, so I was outside using a hand drill. Came out good though.)

Its all put back together and tuned up - intonation is on too. The GHS Precision Flats are about the same tension (maybe a little more) than the D'Addarios that were on. I gotta check the pickup height by ear through the rig. My wife is sleeping in the jam/TiVo room, so have to wait. Sounds good unplugged and feels great. I'm stoked.

Here are some crappy cell pics. I am really digging the feel of it. When I do the refin, I may end up sanding the neck down some. That way I can shoot (spray can) some nitro on the neck when it is detached.

Tort Guard (MIM V Standard)
Lindy Fralin pickups (from JO5)
Wiring harness (250 pots / Mallory cap / Switchcraft input)
AllParts knobs (solid, Fender replacements)
GHS Precision Flatwound strings
(Didn't shield it. I have the tape but decided it would be a mess when I do the refin.)

All that talking, wish the pics were nicer. Have to take more when I can.

Thx for the # Gord_oh!

I futzed with the pickup height a bit and it sounding nice pretty good. The GHS flats definitely have more tension that the D'addarios. Need to give the neck a little tweak. A bit too much bow and need to drop the height just a skosh.

youre a jerk.
;)

Awesome, Stingray, as with everything you do. Tell me about the wiring and switches. What does it all do? Do you have a wiring diagram?

Thanks Squashed - kind of you to say. I like the varitone a lot. It has a lot of functions (all of them passive of course). You can get these in many different wiring configurations, the one I got has these features:

(E-Bay description):

THIS UNIT HAS A MASTER VOLUME CONTROL WITH A HIGH PASS FILTER KIT TO PREVENT LOSS OF HIGHS WHEN LOWERING THE VOLUME.

A THREE WAY MINI TOGGLE SWITCH FOR PICKUP SELECTION - NECK PICKUP ALONE, NECK + BRIDGE, BRIDGE PICKUP ALONE.

A MASTER TONE CONTROL WITH AN ADDED TONE CAP TO ROLL OFF HIGHS ON A SELECTED TONE FOR EVEN MORE VERSATILITY AND DEEPER RANGE.

THIS UNIT HAS A TRUE-BYPASS MINI TOGGLE SWITCH, ENABLES YOU TO BYPASS ANY SETTING ON VARITONE INSTANTLY, GIVING YOU SEVEN TONES FOR EACH PICKUP CONFIGURATION (NECK, BOTH, BRIDGE) FOR A TOTAL OF 21 PASSIVE TONES!

A 6 POSITION VARITONE ROTARY SWITCH WITH DIFFERENT TONE CAPACITORS SPECIALLY SELLECTED FOR BASS. AS A BASS PLAYER THE CAP VALUES CHOSEN HAS THE BEST NATURAL VARIANCE AND USEFUL TONES :

1. SLIGHT TREBLE CUT / HI MID
2. MORE TREBLE CUT / MORE MID
3. LOW MID
4. WARMER MID TONE
5. DARK TONE MID SCOOP
6. DEEPER MID SCOOP TONE

Definitely nice. I'm interested in the varitone.

Thanks jmain - beyone the description above, here is a short video. If you search for "jazz bass varitone" on E-Bay, you'll find many with the different wiring configurations.
