josh neck.jpgThis little jem,I picked up on E Bay a few days ago. I did not do the mods. The fellow who did the mods ran out of money and was forced to shell,,,cheap. This started out as a Squier VMJ(still looks like one) and the following was done: Squier VMJ body, Bad A$$ 2 Bridge, Geddy Lee neck, CTS pots, 75 RI pickguard, Nordstrand Jazz Pickups (NJ4SV), Fender "F" Neck Plate and strung with Chromes flatwound. she weighs 10.0 lbs on my bathroom scale. So is she still considered a Squier? Thanks

10 pound Squier? Interesting. As for calling it a Squier I still call my Frankenbass a Squier despite all that's left is the body and input jack (though it should technically be called a parts bass with a Squier body).

New member here. Have a couple of questions regarding modifying Squiers.

First of all, how many of you recommend swapping out the bridge on the Classic Vibe series basses? I've been thinking of going for all-gold hardware on my CV Jazz to get that Larry Graham look featuring gold hardware on a white body. My only concern is that given my current budget, I'd have to choose between the hardware and potentially getting a new bass (a CV Precision bass, just to round out the flock, so to speak XD).

My question is effectively this: Will I see a substantial improvement on the playability/tone of my bass by changing out the hardware (especially the bridge) to, say, Gotoh, Hipshot or Badass parts? If so, which of these would be the best choice given my desire to go for a gold "drop-in" replacement and is it worth a substantial investment in cash?

My second question has to do with replacement jazz pickups. I know there are already a ton of threads about this (trust me, I've read through them), but most of those deal specifically with MIM/MIA Fenders and I just wanted to be absolutely clear about which choice would be best for my Squier bass.

I've narrowed down my choice to either Seymour Duncan Basslines or DiMarzio Model J pickups. I'm looking for a mean, grindy, punchy and growly tone such as that of a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. If anybody has other suggestions (I've based my choices on what I've read rather than what I've been able to try out for myself) then I'd love to hear them. I figure that if I eventually invest in a Precision bass, I'll throw some flats on it and it will be my main "pocket" bass, so keep in mind that my desire for my Jazz bass is to be very "in-your-face" and slappy.

I have no interest in going active unless it won't require substantial (and expensive) work on my bass.

Thanks a million to anybody who takes the time to address my questions. :)

That would be a waste the bridge is completely solid metal, gotoh 201's are hollow this is a better bridge then a gotoh 201, i really like it. To change the hardware just for another coolor seems like a waste when you could buy a different bass instead IMO.

Yurtra,
there are lots of threads around here about squiers, specifically what to buy, how to mod them, etc.
this thread's purpose is to show off what people have done to their own. if you search im sure you will find many helpful threads to answer your questions. this threads purpose is not that. thanks for dropping in though!

-gord_oh

ps- im not scolding you or anything, but the search button is something to take advantage of around here.

OK, let me ask you fellas this...

One of my basses is as follows. Squier VM Jazz neck, MIM body, Fender custom pups, and a BadA$$ bridge. Is it a Fender? a FrankenJazz, or a Squier tricked out with a Fender body?

I always wondered what to call this thing...help me out here....
