true giant monster rigs

Johnny, it's so cool that you take the time to give back! So few remember their roots--that they are people and bass players before they are stars--and that's what creates the many boundaries that hurt the industry. Stay cool!
Although I will never have a rig that cool, I'm doing the best I can with what's available, and I consider myself fortunate to be where I'm at--just playing in a few bands here and there, doing gigs when I'm needed and enjoying every minute of it! Currently, I run through one SVT rig in my band with two guitarists & I use two stacks (one clean / one effected) in my other band with one guitar player. Bi-amping with the second rig really fills-in the space when the guitarist goes to solo.
One last thing, Johnny. I'm nobody, and I'm sure you have your own preferences, but you would not believe how much better you can hear with in-ear monitor systems. I played for years with standard wedge monitors, but it wasn't until I purchased my Shure monitor system that I could truly hear what was going on. And it was even clearer and better after I converted my entire band to do the same! Trust me--your hearing, your playing, and your vocals are top notch now, but you have absolutely no idea what your true potential is until you transition into the realm of in-ear monitors!

The rack on the left contains my PC and it has a pull out LCD monitor. I have my PC in my amp effects loop and use Ableton Live as my main interface. I can do all kinds of things like looping, amp channel switching, effects switching, and midi guitar synth using various soft synths (absynth, massive, etc) on my PC. My TC G-System lets me control all my effects and switching - even for effects and other things in Ableton. It all fits in my SUV too. I'm still experimenting with applying the technology behind it - it took forever to figure out how to do it all Many possibilities though.
Anyone using effects from their PC on their bass or does anyone do looping?

I did have a PC processing setup for a couple of gigs to do ambient/noise/abstract stuff - audiomulch and a beringer midi footpedal.

I did find computers to be a PITA.....delicate.....plenty of things to go wrong......currently using a digitech sampler pedal for playing back drones.....nice unit simple to use....havn't really tapped into its full potential yet.

Some vst plugins crashing. Needless to say, these could be routed out and a stable setup created....but managing a bass rig + a laptop/midi pedal set up gets cumbersome pretty quickly for my tastes. If there were a cheap rackmout PC with mini monitor though that would be really cool

so it's basically four fridge size cabs, and a tall fascia box that holds the upper PA horns, for each cab..

i also noticed that far left 2/18 is rear loaded and the right one is front loaded.. it almost looks like the rear loaded baffle is a replacement..

how is it wired up??

It's pretty stable but you PCs are PCs -- there are alot of variables and much can go wrong. When you do looping --- do you loop with a click or is it "free form"?

I'm a guitarist and never saw that Crate amp b4. Never liked Crates I tried in the past. It seems more gimmick than anything. It's hard to tell on a youtube video but the lead sound didn't seem up to par. I'm pretty hooked on my Diezel VH4.... If volume were a problem, I'd get another one. The speaker cab was interesting though. I'll have to read up on it.

I can only think of one person who may beat that, and that is Lemmy of Motorhead. I know he doesn't use much PA support, those Marshall stacks are real. Its close that for sure.

But seriously beutiful rig, reminds me why I like the heavy stuff more. Also nice to see a Pro who tours all around the world with an international act post here. That rush playing in front of a big sea of people must be exhilarating. I'll be just happy when the band I'm in gets ready to gig and we can play a few club shows.

im sorry, no dice. i will put up my pink slip against that rig anyday. rig for rig. i have pipe organ low end from my rig the pa will not reproduce with jackhammer articulation. the pa are always ported, crappy reproduction. they are always ported cuz it takes almost twice the power/wattage for a sealed speaker to equal a ported one. i dont care if the crowd cant tell, thats how i roll.... johnny a / staind

hey, i would love to check it out, but im snobby and to me there is a difference between a bass rig, and a bunch lil rigs put together pretending to be a big rig. its more like a convoy or managerie lol. please take no offence. the phasing/timing differences between all those ports and different speakers seems frightening but what the heck, i bet its loud ! johnny a

yes, they were made at different times, thus the different front and rear loads. too bad i didnt think of that first. i have almost switched them , but been too lazy,lol. two 8 ohm speakers, wired paralell in each,giving 4 ohms. with a 10 uf mundorf cap on the tweeter. 2 cabs on each crown in paralell, 2 ohm load. johnny

Yes, you have the mostest bitchen bass amp ever.

It must be good to be really rich and able to buy stuff, congratulations.

Dear god....I think I'd be deaf by the end of the first concert with that rig, lol.

Funny part is I used to be about the big things and over the years, have actually gone 180 to the dead opposite. Small rigs and in-ear monitors. I've done shows lately with no amp at all.

But in no way do I disregard the large rigs or anything. I do think a pure tone is a great thing as opposed to the smaller modeled sounds. It's just for me simplicity has become important.

Of course if I could have the people doing the lugging and setup for me......

well gee, i have. i gave away a free 18 inch exv on this site the other day. some other dude posted on wether he should buy a bass effect pedal or a metronome, (i was disgusted, the metronme is 10x as important) i told him if he would promise not to buy a pedal, i would send him a free new drum machine. he never replied... awhile back i was in my local music store. this 17 year old kid was playing a guitar like a pro ! he did not know who i was, i asked him how long he played, complimented him. he told me he is working a job and paying it monthly, he goes in every saturday morning to visit andplay his layaway guitar. what did i do ? i went to the register and paid for the rest of the guitar, told him who i was, and handed him his fully paid receit. i thought he was going to cry,lol. and i have a new staind fan. some street musicians are excellent. you shoud see thier face when i drop a $100 bill in thier guitar case . i can tell who practices and who dont, i have given away basses, amps, strings, bags of picks,.. i used to be a poor dishwasher, 16-17 grand a year. i enjoyplaying santa clause sometimes, but please dont try to guilt me into it. i have shared. johnny a

Yeah....the power of computers and software is incredible, but
I'd rather just deal with it in the studio....I just used freeform fx...nowadays I'm playing 'normal' bass (abnormally perhaps ;-) with a drummer and activate drones and chords via the digitech jamman pedal. Havn't bothered to get too far with the looping...using a korg ax3000b for fx on the bass on one or two songs.
If we were playing larger shows I'd like to be able to say be playing a song...and send off some of the bass signal to a processing chain and then mix that in as required and have a dynamic organic 'synth' available as it were....but the fact is we are not Rush with a bunch of roadies to keep everything under control.
I hate that feeling when you've just set up a rig on stage and then nothing comes out....supposed to have started playing 5 minutes ago...next band are on in half an hour.....suddenly the troubleshooting pressure is on......
I guess I'm finding simplicity is important...I stopped carting a rack around because it was damn heavy and again.....troubleshooting became an issue.

I don't want to sound all down on this stuff...just for me I don't like laptops on stage at the mo. It seems like someone needs to develop a stage ready PC with a dedicated operating system and visual display unit, and inbuilt sound IO/MIDI etc. Just plug and play, and full support for vsts and win32 apps etc. Receptor is one approach but VDU is an issue.
It could have speaker management stuff in it as well.....maybe do everything.....

no, its not a hi-fi sound at all......
I havn't seen them live.....apparently they often set up in the audience and the split second the previous band finished open up into their wall of speed-noise-prog. Must scare the willies out of some people.

I'm impressed with BIG rigs as much as the next guy. But there is a catch. It's kind of like the 'no pics, no gear' rule. No matter how big a rig is, if you can't load it in, set it up, load it out, and haul it all by yourself...it doesn't count. Sorry.
