So y'all might recognize this thing here I stuck in my pickup/electronics testing bass today...

The verdict is in, I gotta get myself a Patriot sometime.

I can't believe how good and meaty (and mid-y) this single coil pickup gets, unlike the thin lacking sound I've found in so many others. This thing has oomph!

Dude, what's this bass? Is it that German model with the adjustable pickup thing?

Haha, no, its actually pretty cheapo. Its an old Ibanez SR I got from Luknfur of "Dr. Dimento's" pickup review threads, this was one of the basses he had routed out and used for his tests. He had a few and eventually sold off a couple because he wanted to narrow it down to just one. I simply sprayed the cavity black, and built a small sliding "platform" to mount pickups to, so when testing I could easily check their sound in different locations. Oh and also I butchered the neck end of the cavity to get a jazz shaped pickup to fit in the standard neck position. Normally its wired passive V/T, and the chickenhead is a homemade varitone so I can choose what cap I like best.

I did some recording with it when I had a series wired MM humbucker in it, passive in series really makes a difference with those pickups, they get some real warmth back in there.

Anyways so yeah, super ferrite bug, I has it.

Not really all equal, the T-20/Fury is a double-wide version, with the bulk of it hidden under the guard. Pretty big difference in sound compared to the smaller Patriot's pickup, to my ears.

Not aware of any difference between the T-20 and the Fury pickups. They look and sound identical to me.

Dunno if the Patriot pickup is the same as either of the Foundation SF's, never put a meter on them. Regardless, the Patriot doesn't stack up that well against the Foundation's twin pickups.

I am using a chicken head on a 4 way on my Dyna with SF's. So far only 2 positions. Parallel in and out of phase with blend on each. Third may be series in phase.

What does series out of phase do? Hmm.:confused: Maybe I'll just use 4 for an extra cap on the in series??

Hmm, thanks for the info, perhaps I need to get one with 2-SF pickups and run them both on together, or take a patriot and make this pickup fit in it somehow...

Mainly my question about the T-20 vs. Fury were about the entire instruments, not the pickup which most people say is the same...just wondering if I go with one of them what are the pros and cons of each model. I have previously stayed away from the T-20 because my T-40 was WAY too bulky (read:big fat-@ss body) and heavy as hell and no body contour. (the only basses that should be allowed to have no contour are hollowbodies dangit!)

Since you has the Ferrite bug, why not just get a Foundation?

Sounds like good plan, bust out the router. Patriots are cheap, and you already have the hard-to-find part...the jumbo SF. (never seen one for sale anywhere)

Bought the pickup from Scottpro here, it was a T-20 pickup originally.
In regards to the Foundation generally I don't like bridge pickups in basses (the one I do like is my avatar, with old dimarzio model J's), and also find without a pickguard instruments look pretty bland. I also like to tinker, and pickguards and control plates just mean easily reversed mods if its something I don't want to butcher.

Also theres a big price difference between foundations and patriots, lately I see patriots go for around 100-150, whereas foundations seem to go for something like 300. For some reason I also see more Patriots than Foundations with the schaller hardware that I really dig, loved those tuners on my T-40.

Speaking of which heres one in the aforementioned gold finish, AND the old "P" knobs. A bit pricey but dang you dont see those much...

But yeah, to sum up, I'm picky and I tend to drive people crazy when it comes to what I like and don't. I have a lead on a cheap patriot with an easily remedied cracked pickguard, worst case scenario I have a $100 bass that I don't like as much as I thought I would.

Right. And as you can see, the Patriot has its admirers. Who knows, even though you've tasted the T-20 'meat' in your test bass, you might still like the stock Patriot.

I say beef it up with T-20 power. Get the big round sound, but in a lighter chassis.

I am going to update my restore thread in the luthier's corner, but I have my pickguard all flat and straight now.

I put it in the oven at 170F under two sheets of glass and I have been wet sanding it with very low grit to get the scrapes out. I also fixed the crack with super glu and sanded the excess.

I can't wait to put it back together.

Probably next week. Paiting it right now. I will add clear coat this week. It takes 2 days between application to get it all smooth.

My patriot cost me $70 but with a trash body, although an impeccable neck.

I bought a T40 with a Foundation both for $300 and with bullet cases. Flipped the T40.

I have Google alerts working for me in my CL :)

The Pat was in back shape, I could have got it for $50 but felt sorry for the guy, who was a navy vet with lots of medical problems, living in a trailer, and I gave him his asking price.

Just picked up this Fury the other day for $90 bucks. The body is pretty beat up but everything else appears to be good. I'll probably take it for a setup pretty soon and it will feel even better. It's also my first bass!
