From the pics it seems to be color shifting finish. I don't know when that was invented, but I don't remember it in 1980. It might just be bad pics, but from the angle looking down at the body, rather than straight, looks purple. If I were to venture a guess, I'd say, not factory.
If you have a moment, could you measure the distance between the headstock and the bottom of the string retainer? I just need to know how high it is off the headstock.

It measures about .225" from the face of the headstock to the top of the strings.
I would love a murdered out Patriot/rosewood fingerboard. Alas, I kinda need frets.

I have never seen nor heard of a factory flip flop finish of that era. Not saying it didn't happen, but flip flops starting squeaking out in the 90s, IIRC. There could have certainly been a guy at Peavey's paint booth that moved from Southern California and had experience shooting custom Hot Rod finishes..?
Has anyone succeeded in getting a J/MM Milly to sound similar to a Cirrus? I really want a five string Cirrus, but they’re getting increasingly rare and expensive, and I already have a Milly Plus 5er I got from @Chuck M
I duuno, I've always enjoyed my Milly's for what they are. The pups are so different but maybe favor the neck pup and scoop the mids a bit?
Anything is possible. That bass is a mid-80's model, and flip flop paint was def available at that time, so who knows.

I'm with wild4oldcars, I highly suspect it to be a refin.
Also, look at those saddles, looks like it was converted to southpaw and back, and not set up again.
Very poor seller , released in 82 and discontinued by 83.
Volume control works all 3 pickups. 1 tone pot dealt with neck/middle pickups . Other "tone" pot did the bridge pickup humbucker/single coil thing.
No in/out phase malarky just single coils or humbuckers via the 5 way switch.
It's been quite a while since I had it, pretty sure it was late 80's, 2nd gen script logo.
The pics are from the ebay auction where I bought it. I straightened out the saddles and properly intonated the bass when it arrived. Yes, I agree that it was likely played lefty by its PO. That being the case, it would have nothing to do with whether or not it was refinished. I'm pretty skeptical about the originality of the finish, too. Still, on close inspection the play wear on the body was commensurate with the overall wear. If it was refin'd it was a very pro job sans any signs of a refin.
While I had it for about a year, the neck began developing a twist that was probably going to get worse. Paid $150 for it, put it on consignment at my local shop for $90 with the proviso that the twist would be made known by anyone interested in the bass. It sold in a couple days to a buyer who only cared about the oddball finish. The odd finish was the main reason I bought it in the first place, myself. Too bad about the bad neck, it had cool factor and was light weight.
