Bass landed today. SN puts it at a '91 model. Pics coming.. Needs a good cleaning and set up. Think the strings may be the ones that originally came on it! LOL!

Couple of questions for those who may know.. What's a good cleaner to use on this bass? Just want to get the gunk and grime off and put a fresh coat of tung oil on it. Also, does anyone know if the Fender aftermarket pup will fit into the routs on this bass?

I just purchased a Peavey Fury from a TBer and it looks as though from the serial # it is a 1990 USA model. My question what is the body made of? I could not find specs on this thing anywhere. If this question has been asked a bunch of times I am sorry to clutter the thread. I did search and found no results. Any help appreciated.

Does it oave a single Super Ferrite pickup or a standard P style? According to the Peavey website it could either be ash or poplar..

It has the standard P style pickup. The headstock on mine is different from the manual, it is outlined in black. I am assuming since that manual is from 1996 that that is the newer stlye. Thanks, I can not wait to get it. I used to actually play one in 89-90 that a friend of mine had. I offered to buy that thing, trading it for my dean explorer (hollywood z).

So, I got my B Quad 5 a few months ago. But then I packed it back up almost right away and sent it off to MNAirhead for a proper setup. I got it back today (thanks again, Tim!!) and got to play with it for a little while.

AAaaaaahhhhh...... I am SO glad to have this puppy back! On Tim's recommendation, I sent a set of GHS Contact Core Super Steel strings with it, which he put on. I requested that he set it up a little higher than he otherwise would because my extremely poor technique doesn't work very well with a bass with action that is too low.

It came back with the action seemingly dialed in perfectly for me. My Sadowsky came with action that was so low I couldn't play it and I tweaked it myself to get it where I can play it. Since then, it has had the lowest action of all my basses. But now, I think the B Quad is just as low. And it sounds KILLER!! I'm definitely glad I took Tim's recommendation and went with these strings.

I like to use the VFL (i.e. magnetic) pickups to really determine what sound I'm going for. Solo the front and play up near the fretboard for a very P-like sound. Solo the bridge pickup and play between the pickups for a J-like growl. And I like to set the piezo pickups to full on, no matter what, as it adds a warmth that isn't there with just the magnetic pickups.

I can't wait to spend some more time with it!!

We have to be cautious as were clueless whats been done to your bass.

Let's start with the basics. Don't dry out your wood and don't blotch it up

Clean it slowly. Try water first and tons of clean rags. If this doesn't work. Douse it in a protectant like Dunlop let it sit then gradually clean it

Remember to do it evenly as mahogany and koa will patina through the years

Note the koa unities are known for neck stability issues. Triple check you can get it arrow straight before spending tons of time on it

when they were releasing the mahogany and koa basses.. early on it was trendy to use a hard tung oil on the basses.. this changes the options.

OVERALL ... it's kind of risky as old natural wood patinas... using harsh abrasives or chemicals will strip it and leave the bass looking splotchy.

On your recommendation, I used some water and a lot of elbow grease and the bass cleaned up nicely! There are a few places around the pots but I'm not too worried about them as the knobs cover them up. Still would like to replace the pups though. Any recommendations?

any chance you can post pix of your bass.

IF you want to repair them, chances are it's very easy and straight forward.

replacement pickups are commonly just taste... internet fools will post "you need" or "I love" and forget to ask you what you like

Many times a prudent route, is to post some clips of what you want it to sound like, we can then discuss strings, preamps, pickups etc...
